The guy might have passed anyway but I found it a lil odd that in a PRO match the ref told the guy what to do in the middle of the match to get the points.

Tom's first match was sick! He won like 14-0. He had some SICK X-guard sweep, and just handleddddddddd the guy. It was very cool seeing my instructor roll for the first time. Ive seem him fight MMA back in the day but at that time I was with a rival organization and never paid much attention to him. He did awesome!
TOTH IS A FREAK. VERY TECHNICLE. HE ALMOST ALWAYS ROLLS WITH PEOPLE SMALLER THAN HIM AND NEVER TRY'S TO OUT MUSCLE PEOLPLE. HE TRIES TO USE GOOD TECHNIQUE TO ROLL IN PRACTICE. I WATCHED HIM PREPARE THE LAST 3 WEEKS B-4 THE TOURNEY WITH MY INSTRUCTOR. VERY RESPECTABLE PERSON ALSO. NEVER HAS AN EGO,AND WILLING TO HELP THE REST OF US OUT. JUST WONDERING WHAT BELT MULLER IS?

he really said that in the middle of the match? they're supposed to know that thjemselves, or get advice from their coach on the side if anything.

that's pretty unprofessional.

Not true. If people ask questions regarding the rules the ref can tell them why they are not getting the points.

If you go knee on belly without the proper posture and I start hearing flack about not calling points. I will explain to the coach or competitor why they have not been awarded.

Its the guy getting scored ons responsibility to not get into that position.

^agreed. The ref is announcing it to both competitors, really. If the top guy wants the points, he secures the position as per the ref's instructions. If the bottom guy doesn't want to give up the points, he has to defend the position and prevent the top guy from securing the position the ref described. It's fine for a ref to keep the competitors informed on what he's seeing and how he's scoring. This is especially true for pro-divisions, where there is a lot on the line and the competitors come from all over and may not be used to the rules/reffing of the particular event.

Same thing, you ask why no points or advantage, you get the answer per the rules. this makes things consistent.

There are alot of wierd spots and transitiions in Jiu-Jitsu, people do make mistakes from time to time. I've reffed a good amount. I can say that the GQ refs are top level, and most of them are brown or black belts.

well yeah if they ask. I thought it was implied the ref was just throwing it out there. I've even had to remind the ref (at naga) to give me points on several occasions, let alone ask.
