I have been training now for just over 12 months
Our gym is an MMA gym. Our belt system is a little different to BJJ. We start at white then yellow this is the orange grading then green then blue. Once we reach Blue it will be the equivalent of a BJJ blue belt. Our BJJ is being overseen by Luke Beston from Beston Gracie Newcastle Australia. Our trainer Rodd Eaddie trained with Luke for many years and one the NSW state titles in Pankration while training there. He has a black belt in Karate and Kenpo and is currently in the process of receiving a BJJ grading with Luke

What are your thoughts?

For which belt are you doing this exam for?

I am confused:
How can you say that your MMA blue belt be equavilent to a BJJ blue?

So are you learning BJJ from someone with out a grade? I realize this is MMA and not traditional JJ but you can't be having people who just watch or make for that matter (everyones looking at you Ari) youtube video's teach you stuff. I hope your instuctors legit, but that being said even being taught MMA stand up by someone who does karate/kenpo seems a little shady to me.

I am going for Orange.

I guess the idea behind the gym is to get a good grounding in all the assets of self defence. Once we reach blue it will be the equivalent to a bjj blue because we would have demonstrated all the techniques necessary to acquire that belt.

For an Orange MMA belt, I like the list of techniques to demonstrate.

Who is making the list of techniques to demonstrate for blue belt?

Also, in BJJ it is not about demonstrating techiques.
It is about knowing techniques and applying them on a daily basis on the mats under the supervision of a BB.
Then one day, the BB will ask to sit the exam.
The exam itself is just a formality.
Some instructors actually just throw a belt at you at the end of the training.

I doubt that your blue belt would ever be the same as a BJJ blue.
I am not saying it is lower or higher.
It is just a different systems.

Meanwhile, good luck on your exam.

And congrats on your club becoming affiliated to Luke Beston (Royler Gracie BB).

As I said Rodd is a state title holder in Pankration and has competed in and trained a number of fighters for Pankration and MMA fights he is no Ari. I agree not having an official BJJ belt is not ideal but Luke Beston has been up conducted a seminar and given Rodd the thumbs up even promoting our GYM + upcoming seminars on his own website.
