we have this pole smoker in my city who owns one of the other 4 mma gyms around. He always talks crap about us, rarely do we ever talk it back, and is extremely disrespectful to anyone from our gym for no reason, new and old - including laughing at people sarcastically and changing the way he treats people when he finds out that they train with us... even little white belts that have been training under 6 months that he may meet somewhere through the grappling 'community' ; although he is a decent blackbelt, he is a douchebag of a person.
Recently one of our guys fought mma - he made it his personal duty to call up the opposing gym from a different city and offered to help them out with video of him grappling and also cornered their fighter against our guy.. (we still won, thankfully)
it motivates me though because i cant wait until i can enter the next tournament in our state and smash his guys.

I hate shit like that. You all know that Ari is from my home town and I have posted that I know him a bit from way back. You all also know that I train at a different BJJ school with a BB under marcus Soares. Initially, Adam was polite and offered Ari a chance to come down and traine, invited him to seminars and shit. But it has gotten pretty bad. First it was the Carlson Gracie book with Eddie Bravo book hidden inside prank. That pissed alot of people off and Adam was the reason Marcus didn't show up at Ari's gym for a friendly visit brazilian style. But now there has been enough shit talked (some of the guys from my gym have done their share) with Ari claiming Adam is poaching his students and other bullshit, that we now have a legit school rivalry.
I got no time for any of that. I don't want to run into some dude and start talking BJJ (it does happen some times), find out we are from rival schools and next thing you know we are in some Bruce Lee shit, defending our masters dun dun dun! If Eddie comes to town, I don't want to have to skip the seminar and when we bring guys like Leo Veria or De La riva in, why should his guys suffer. Live and let live dude.
Interestingly, we are pretty cool with the other MMA gym.

You know, you don't have to actually BE from the 80's to watch a movie FROM the 80's. They still show that movie today. LOL

MMA is more like golf than anything else, a game against myself. I always have stayed humble and nice and the fact that win or lose is secondary to the fact that I gave my everything in the battle. Even though it was combat, it was still a sport so no anger ever entered into it. Now it has and I don't appreciate it very much (especially considering its my first fight ever).

Well you will find out real quick that MMA isn't like "golf" in any way shape or form. I get what you were referring to, but it just doesn't hold water, especially since you haven't actually done "MMA" yet. I hope you take to it and do well, tho!!!
If they changed your opponent after finding out what gym you are from i would honestly not take the fight, i would also not take a fight againts anyone i didn't know the name of and had a chance to research him. i know that alot of these little amatuer shows don't give a ton of info, but you don't need to accept, period!
Protect yourself and go into your first fight with the correct info you need. You repeat over and over that you wanted to test yourself againts someone that is similiar skill/training time as you. Don't rush into something blindly.
Ask the promoter to face someone from a different gym in this first fight, test yourself and see if you are a "golfer" or not. Then if you take to it and actually have the fighting spirit, then you can challenge this other gym's guy. You didn't ask for this and you didn't change the opponent, they did.....to bad for them.
Either get an opponent from a different school (with info on him) or wait until the next show imo.

yeah at this promotion the only guys who get more than a month notice on who they are fighting are upper card guys. My training partner is the one who set up this fight for me and is dealing with the promoter and he said he is getting the fight changed because I don't need to be involved in this situation. My coach across the state wanted me to fight at a different promotion (and to wait 2 more months before I took a fight). So if this doesn't work out its fine with me, I have other options.
(by the way alot of the things you said, my coach has already said. I have a feeling you know what you are talking about)
