which would suit my goals?

1) sub wrestling
2) bjj
3) judo
4) ?

Looking to enroll in the police academy in 2-3 years so I'm looking to get some decent grappling training in before-hand. I've got a few reputable gyms around here so I'm eager to take advantage of them. I'm open for suggestions/thoughts as to what might be my best path, although, of course, I know the top 3 are all, for the most part, intertwined. Basically something practical and applicable is what I'm after. I was thinking sub wrestling, but hey, I'm ignorant. Help me out fellas?

Yea I was kinda hesitant to post, because they're so similar, but I wanted peoples opinions anyway. I did some light reading on Sambo, I wish they had a gym like that around here, but I'm guessing Judo would do?

I would definetely recommend Judo for 2 reasons:

1) emphasis on standing, which is crucial when you are talking self-defense, cop-work. Plus ground work

2) it will harden you up more than BJJ and sub wrestling. I am a BJJ guy myselfand yes, there are BJJ places out there that will make you tough. But I think in Judo it comes more naturally.

If you can fin a BJJ school that teaches the self-defense curriculum, then that is very good also. They will teach you very useful stuff.

But don't go to a sport BJJ or SW school, if you are trying to prepare for the street (if that is even possible).

SW is out, primarily because I believe that they mostly focus on sport aspects of the arts. Plus there are a lot of crap schools out there training the next UFC fighter *rolleyes*

If you sign up now and don't go to the academy for 2-3 years and stick with it, it doesn't matter which one of those three you pick in my opinion. You'll be schooling most everybody there by then. You have to realize though, that a vast majority of the moves you will learn will more than likely be "banned" from use in the police dept. We want the police to protect us but then don't want them to be "too rough". Its completely stupid. Sorry for getting off subject, I just had a conversation with an officer that trains at my gym the other day. Its pretty upsetting how much their hands are tied today, with lawsuits and all.

All that said, I would recommend BJJ. Find a school where the intructor teaches takedowns, at least once every couple of weeks and I think you'll have a very well rounded arsenal for the streets.

for a cop...

id say judo. bjj is too ground oriented. if your a cop your gonna need to take your adversary to the ground and most bjj schools completely ignore the standup part that is why when they roll they start from the knees.

ask the bjj people if they feel comfortable standing up and i bet the vast majority are clueless with the stand up part.

im not bashing bjj, i do bjj myself and i love it but for a cop i think judo is better.

Well, its personal preference although there are things to consider.

When a police officer has to restrain a person what position are they in when they do it?

Do they take the "per" down?

Do they pin or go for a submission?

many more things to ask yourself...

I am completely comfortable with my throws and takedowns. BJJ peeps mostly start rolling from the knees to avoid injuries associated with doing takedowns and throws all the time.

I am currently going through the background investigation for the United States Border Patrol and I chose BJJ because I shudder every time I see a criminal take a cop to the ground.

I'm a BJJ guy that just started in Judo, and I have to say Judo is definitely what would suit you best, considering your career.
