Gi No Gi opinon ....
I typed this for the other question but anyway......
...............
Gi is fun, you will like it.... It's much more technical once you start learning the infinant more options you have. Gi is more leisurly and I think attracts friendlier competition. It is truly a game much more of knowledge of the sport instead of athletic abliity and strength. I also thin it is less of an injury prone sports as well.
It's funny, after a no gi practice I am hell bent on becoming a beast grappler and lifting, running, dieting ect.. and all about no gi submission grappling. Then after a Gi practice I am all about studying technique, learning moves, giving up positions, and fighting for position then submission. They balance each other so much...
My trainer is a brazilian and he is always quick to point out that all the great champions are Gi grapplers who remove their Gi 3-6 months before the big submission grappling tournaments.
I think that through the day to day learning it is better to train Gi because you dont get hurt as much, you learn more about postitioning, you learn to be calmer and think more and fight smarter, while still laying the foundation of all the sub grappling techinques.
Then when you are training for a competition you remove your gi 3-6 months out, start heavy conditioning, refine your dieting, and train harder. I was taught if you train like this year round, you will inevitably get injured and slow down your development.
Little off topic but anyway....

I completely agree, but I think that its not hte style that accounts for your different mind sets, I think its your training partners and coaches. I might be wrong but most nogi guys have extensive wrestling experience where the dudes trained to be the superior athlete, however in gi most of the guys are taught to beat thier opponents using technique. I started my grappling with wrestling then no-gi, then gi. I wish I could'e done gi first cause my no-gi training give me some trouble picking up the finer points of the BJJ moves. During rolling I always tried overwhelming my opponents on top. That habit hindered my learning and while I got away with it for a bit, I wasnt learning too much, and I couldn't finish my oppoenets and I was screwed when I got reveresed or taken down. Then when I went with purples outworking and driving them to their backs just wasted my energy cause tehy werent trying to escape but they were wcomfortable there and were finishing my of their backs.

Don't worry if you can't write a sensible block of text yet. You will if you keep going to school and learning.

I train MMA, so really no gi is what I prefer. I don't mind gi, it just isn't particularly useful for MMA.

I've found that a lot of the gi BJJ guys I've rolled with are the crazy ones and the no-gi guys are the calm ones. Last week two guys were rolling, one gi and one no-gi and the gi guy wraps his belt around the no-gi guy's throat. I don't know how all schools are but at ours if you have one guy rolling gi and the other no-gi, you both lay off the others clothes. But I nearly had my t-shirt ripped off by a gi guy two weeks ago. Live, learn, and try to get better than the other guy.
