I think he was just pointing out your not going to get good off learning advance techniques you see online. You need time, and practice to get good at the things your coach is teaching you.
Everyone who is there that is beating you has been there longer and is probably beating you with moves coach showed them, and has beaten into their head. They know what your going for as soon as you start moving. Best thing you can do is concentrate on the things you know.. try to make them work. Being good is a mind set, not a technique.

seriously dude. If you've have 4 classes don't focus so much on new techs. Drill a lot, and free train even more. You need to teach your body sensitivity to movement and balance. Just roll man, try new shit. I'm sure heaps of people here will disagree, but i think experimentation on the mats is one of the most important things on the mat. Get your own style happening. Find out what works for you. You don't want to end up as one of those ertenal white belts with an encyclopedia of technical knowledge, but barely any mat time, who can tell you how to do the latest x guard sweeps, but can't pass the guard of someone on their 3rd class. Well, that was exagerating, but I'm sure a lot of you know the type I'm talking about

what clubber said. just get used to rolling and how your body moves. learn the basics before getting crazy with the techniques.
basically if you are in the closed guard you want to posture up. if you have full guard you need to make sure you oponent isn't posturing up. ask your coach he'll be glad to show you and this is why you pay him.
