French Grip in Judo and the possibilities

French Grip in Judo and the possibilities

French grip = opponent holds one hand on your lapel, if it is the right hand you grab the lseeve near the hand with your right nad grip with your left arm further up: either armpit or shoulder

I could see this being a very dominant position you can get agaisnt a really stiff arm pushing kinda opponenet.

First time I really dealt with it today on an instructional level. I had seen Yoko Wakare from it before but not gone in to detail about it.

We also did a makikomi Kosoto Gake that was pretty brutal, I cannot see a counter to this one, infact that seemed to be an common denominator in all the throws from french grip, hard to counter

Other throws we did was a Harai Goshi

A sacrifice backwards where you keep the grip near his wrist, reach over his arm with the arm next to your opponenet and grab the pants at the kneeand sit down, name? I have always used this or similar as a counter againts most hip-throws

A sacrifice throw where you put your right foot under the knee of his left foot and roll down on your side/shoulder, a side separation throw. Name for this?

Anybody who uses this with any success? More throws that uses this grip?

The sacrifice that you are talking about...I did that quite often in nogi grappling. I just considered it a taniotoshi but not really sure. I would just backhand at the back of his leg(knee) and stick my leg across behind his far leg.

^^^from what I experienced today you don't have to do that if you have his arm across your chest, you jsut don't have any balance to resist when 280pounds YeahBee has a grip and throws himself backwards

As he does the occaisional 'pull' you half step in to give an idea of no resistance, yet yank deep with his arm...so your stepping in his comfort zone(attack?) ...while pulling him in deep which will cause him to plant heavy with the right foot(right handed). You drop and his leg crouches somewhat.

...if you are talking about his throw.

In the pic above it would be close fellas right hand on oponents sleeve.

I am interested.

Could any of you please post a pic of the actual grip? I'm having trouble using my imagination on this one.

Much appriciated.
