Experience Entering a Tournament

Hey guys, there is a tournament at the end of next month, gi and no gi on Nov 30. By then I would have been training in BJJ for 3 months. There are diffrent levels, so I am going to join the beginner's level. I am going to join for the fun of it. I know 3 months is very little. Just wondering how long you guys trained for before entering a tournament?

about the same. I was pressured by a partner but had a ton of fun. You will love it or hate it but either way you will gain alot of experience and respect for competitors

I did my first tournament with about 3 months experience. It was the NAGA Arnold classic (probably the biggest/toughest tourney in the midwest). I had a blast.

Make your goal to learn as much as possible and have as much fun as possible and you'll be just fine.

yeah about the same for me, i started in april/may and had my first tourney in june, i had a little bit of traditional jiu-jitsu (8 mths) and backyard grappling exp first, so i was probably equiv. to 3-4 mths real training.

Yep, 3 months, October to January, for me (with a wrestling background). Go in with the right attitude and enter more than one category (if you can). I always enter the adult and the old men's category, so I get plenty of rolls, but many tournaments are one and out, and that's a pain if you lose your first match.

6 weeks for me. Here's how I did:

A disappointing performance | Learnin' Jits - a BJJ blog

Don't let that discourage you though. Practice take downs because that is where I was weak at (obviously). I've been practicing hard and can't wait for the next opportunity to compete.

My bjj comp record is 0-7 so take everything I say in the grappling forum with a grain of salt.

Oh yeah...the choke out. Don't show him that!!!

P.S. I appreciate that you don't take yourself so seriously that you refuse to show the video. Honestly, I think it gives some indication that you probably will be able to stick around in BJJ for a while.
