Do you compete in the Absolute?

Old school jiu jitsu guys always say that the absolute is the ultimate competition, where the true champions are born. I never competed in the absolute divisions as a white belt but now, after a few turns competing as a blue belt, I'm considering competing in the absolute division as well as in my division (LW, <155 lbs/70 kgs) next time out.

How many of you compete regularly in the absolute as well as at your own weight? I'm especially curious about those of you who are closer to my end of the scale.

It would be a special challenge for me because I am a total top player at my weight division. Slow, heavy, crushing, is how I would describe my jiu jitsu. So there are a few things I would need to add to/improve on before taking on opponents who are likely going to outweigh me by many pounds ...

FWIW, my target is the local Revolution (leapllc.com) event in November (though there's another event in September a few miles down the road that might be another opportunity to try out the absolute ...)

absolute > weight divisions

if you go to wiki and look under the mundials or the adcc they only show results of the absolute division, and not the individual weight classes

What's your point? The omission by wikipedia isn't an indictment of weight classes, it's an indictment of wikipedia.

my point is that no one cares about the individual weight classes, the general consensus is that the absolute division is more prestigious

id rather medal in the absolute division of the mundials than in my weight class

My advice is from now until the absolute to work nothing put your guard game. Someone that only has a top game at 155 will be crushed.

I'm the little guy...

This ended up with him muscling out of a triangle and winning by two points- and afterwards I thought of a hundred things I SHOULD have done- guess that's how we learn at tourneys!

Well, if I've already had 6 or so matches in my gi and no gi divisions before the absolutes, it's hard to motivate yourself to go for it. That's just too many matches in a day. If it's a 2 day tournament or if you skip either gi or no gi at your weight, then the absolute becomes an exciting challenge.

I haven't yet, but that's just because the only times I've competed my cardio was not up to par yet. Next time I compete, I'll definetely do absolute.
