Aikido?

I posted a thread asking about a good grappling art to start out in a while back. For the time being the only grappling art that fits my schedule and bank account is Aikido. I wanted some expert opinions on this art from. Is it practical or should I just learn another form of striking until something better comes up? Just wanted to hear what you grapple guys think.

Thanks.

it should be effective if your opponent is rushing you down wildly. I say take a trial lesson

No, aikido isn't all that practical in my opinion. Sure, there are SOME and I stress SOME things in it that work, but BJJ, judo, wrestling, sambo are all much, much more effective and practical grappling arts.

By the way, aikido isn't a striking art. The only striking that is generally ever done is aikido are striking feints that are used to elicit a response from your opponent to take advantage of as an openning.

In the amount of time it would take you to actually make aikido effective, you could spend the same amount of time in another grappling art and become even better.

there is always an aikido class that uses the mats after jiu jitsu. I would sometimes stay after just to take a look. Alot of what they were doing has one person overcommiting on something (charging at aikido practicioner, holding the practicioner's shoulder/wrist) and the practicioner flows with the other persons movement to evade an attack and be free from danger. It was interesting, worth a trial class

not really. I've done Aikido. Once you're already a serious fighter there is definitely shit in Aikido that you can find useful, but to take Aikido as a means to learn how to fight (or develope a base for learning to fight) with no real prior training is just preposterous.

you're better off spending your time in a boxing gym or something like that. It'll probably save you a lot of money also.

and are you sure there aren't any local Judo Dojo in your area? Isn't Judo the most popular martial art in the world?
