Darce defense

I love half guard, but always find myself getting darced (mainly no arm darce chokes because I can defend the arm in darce.. just not the no arm darce).

Regular darce I just grab the inside of my thigh and keep my arm straight so the choke never comes into play. But no arm darce, I find myself panicking and rolling the guy over onto his back where he usually throws his legs over. I can attempt to stack him like a regular guillotine defense, but it rarely ever works.

Any tips on defending the choke before it is even a factor? Or escapes out of a no arm darce?

Thanks a lot!

isn't a "no arm darce" a guillotine?

don't roll over and sweep him. You obviously have the underhook if he has a "no-arm darce" (i don't even know what this is). Also, he doesn't have head control because i'm assuming he's trying to do whatever this move is.

That's what I thought, he said it's a no arm darce. Even if I do not roll him over all he has to do is face me even in lock down inside my half guard he was still able to finish the choke.

He sets it up as a darce, then the defender pulls his arm out and he keeps the darce position around the head and is still able to finish the choke without the arm in.

When he goes for it, take his back. I've found no-arm darce's to be garbage because they leave your back completely exposed.

Once he locks it in though, you cant take his back without your head

No arm darce = modified guillotine. Different position but same choke. See the latest Nate Diaz fight.

If he has it locked in then, much like every other submission, you're not escaping. You need to prevent the submission in the first place and that means quit giving him your neck. The second you feel him going for the darce then it's time for you to pull your head away and take away the choke. By going into him and even sweeping him you're making his job easier.

There is a sweep that I've been working on when people go for the darce in my half. Let's take a "standard" right handed person half guard, meaning you have HIS right leg trapped, your left arm is the underhook and you might be doing the monkey paw with your right arm on his left bicep and you are on your right hip. When he goes for the wizzer on your left arm I curl my left hand back under and trap his wrist. Hold it to your chest. Tight, tight, tight! Even if he grabs your collar you are okay...for a couple seconds anyway. Then take your right hand and grab his pants by his left knee (or underhook that leg if no gi?) Then you actually want to go flat on your back! (I think anyway) As you need to transition and get him on top of you. Don't worry he's not staying there for long. As you go to your back you lift his leg and turn onto your LEFT hip. That hand you now have trapped to your chest? That's the arm he's supposed to post with to stop the sweep...but you've got it pinned to your chest! Keep lifting, keep turning, viola, sweep and you should end up in HIS half guard.

Anyone better acquainted with this sweep see anything I missed? I think there is a Keith Owen vid of it somewhere?

Brother, that was a great explanation.
Except TS's problem is getting choked with no whizzer.

I use the sweep you describe all the time. Backed fully
