can't tap me so u can't train me- i won't train w/u
at a grappling club awhile back; overheard two of the more tenured members talking, they were discussing a bjj guy in my city. Both guys had mentioned training w/him, one guy seemed very excited about training w/him, get some extra mat time and maybe learn some new tricks.
the other guy, one who had been at this club the longest and been the most consistent guy other than the instructor; he seemed less than impressed at the notion of training w/this other instructor, in fact he was down right dismissive.
at a later point in the class i asked him, how come u won't train w/this guy; i asked him if the instructor at the club would have an issue, he said no. That the instructor wants people to broaden their horizons, an meet diff and unfamiliar guys to train/spar.
so i asked him, what was the issue; he said he rolled w/the guy 3-4 times, going hard and the guy couldn't tap him. An he felt if this guy is legit and any good, but can't tap him; then he couldn't or didn't think he could learn much from him, he stated that his current instructor can tap him any and every way possible. SO WHAT CAN HE LEARN FROM A GUY WHO CAN'T...
do u agree w/this thought process, or do u feel like that is biased and unfair; i understand the difference tween grappling/boxing/etc, but i have come across alot of guys who feel if the instructor (s) can't beat or tap u, then they have nothing to offer.
in striking even if the coach/trainer can't kick ur ass, most guys still feel they can learn something from them, regardless of the fact if said coach could kick ur ass or outbox u or not.

I'll not narrow my horizons by thinking I cannot learn from anybody.
I've learned things from all sorts of belts. What matter if they can't tap me, as long as they have something to teach?

Wouldnt this line of thinking be a bit like a football player saying "If my couch cant tackle me, I've got nothing to learn from him"???
I'm w/ Judogido... you can learn things from people of every belt level. You're possibly cutting yourself off from some potentially great insights, if you think you can only learn from people that can make you tap. Just my .02...

Yeah i'm not paying monthly fee's to someone who I can beat on.
But there are several legit guys who are now too old or out of shape to actually beat my ass, but that is a different story.

I'm not interested in an instructor's ability to tap me, only their ability to teach me.

See now I would not learn from someone I didn't RESPECT.
But that's different, albeit related.
I can beat my coach now - but he's older, smaller and more injury-ridden. Yet he has a great wealth of skill and teaching ability and a depth of experience at coaching the national team - going to worlds etc.... stuff I cant ever get even NEAR to.
There are other coaches I know that could beat me - but mainly because they are bigger and stronger.

Not a chance in hell. I reckon chances are you can learn something for everyone, even it's it's how NOT to do something. Didn't Renzo once say that a footlock variation he tried in a Pride fight (vs Carlos Newton I believe) he learned from a white belt?
It also depends on their game. Some people just don't go out there looking to tap. For me personally while I used to look at the tap as the be all and end all, now I get more pride out of a good sweep.

You think TB Rays manager Joe Maddon can hit a Jake Shields fast ball or play the 3rd base like Longoria?
How about parcells, could he rush the passer like Lawrence Taylor?
Some people are gifted mentally and can convey thoughts and strategies better than others. Just because they cannot dominate you in a physical sense does not mean you cannot learn from them.
