I like how people forget about Aoki. Anytime he fights they always say he is primarily a Judoka and not a BJJ player.

If this thread said "in the UFC" it would be a little more accurate.

For instance, my Judo is being taken at an MMA school so perhaps he will continue to keep stuff like naga and MMA in mind, but maybe a strictly Judo school will be different? I dunno
My sensei still teaches morote-gari, kata guruma, etc as well. I think it depends on the philosophy of the dojo: competition or traditional.
My dojo is a traditional school, so we learn the Kodokan techniques. We do not focus on sport judo or Olympic style judo. That being said, when we do compete, we excel. My sensei's thought is that being fundamentally sound will beat those who train only to win competitions.

Thales Leites and Maia were both Judo black belts before doing BJJ, they should be listed.

Same with Jacare

Judo, Sambo, MT, Boxing...ya ya ya.......
MMA is MMA. MMA has evolved to the point where it is a "stand alone sport". While there is some merit to individual syles as "bases" for MMA, the truth is the best base for MMA is,........yes, you guessed it, its MMA. The future will see more and more gyms go away from this old, seperate arts, thing......towards the fully integrated MMA training model.

I agree with you tho found it quite surprising to hear that GSP trains mostly by hitting sport-specific gyms...to the point he was considering an attempt at oly freestyle in 2012.

You can still do leg takedowns but it has to be from a consecutive attack that did not start with a leg takedown or you get Hansumake! DQ!

Or you can go a pickup as a counter or if the guy has a grip over your back.
