butterfly guard works great nogi as well. It's a more aggressive guard and once you understand over/under, it becomes a real asset to your game.

Great thread, i also love playing from BFG and i think the biggest asset it has given my gaurd game is its really hard for anyone even larger guys to pass now.

Out of curiosity whats cross gaurd?

different people play cross guard different, but the one i have been learning is Robson Mauro's Cross Guard,
here is a pic


but basically, from open guard, put your left foot under your opponents right armpit and grip the inside of your opponents right knee crease with your left hand, and their right sleeve with a hook grip with your right hand, your right leg should be able to spin free and do various attacks/sweeps.

Can you explain "the importance of keeping the shin connected to the chest of the opponent" in a bit more detail?

There is not a best guard. You want your guard to be very flexible in the fact you can switch from different types of guards. My whole guard game centers around the spider guard (triangle,sweeps) de la riva (when he puts on knee on the ground) and butterfly (to hook sweep). I see what you mean about the unification, but I would work on everything.

there's a few reason's. most noteably so he doesn't slip his hand under; which will help him pass and avoid any possible submissions
