Breakthrough or just a good day.
Hi all, I've been reading this forum for years but never posted. Thought I'd take the plunge.
I think i had a breakthrough this weekend, but am not entirely sure. I've been training for several years and usually when I roll I'm somewhat nervous and stressed and far more focused on what my opponent is doing then what I want to do.
This weekend I went to open mat and things were different. I was totally relaxed, like I'd been there hundreds of times before (which in reality I have). No stress at all. Oh, you're going hip bump? I'll stuff that. Kimora transition? Chin tucked, try again. It was like everything was in slow motion, and I could just play my game.
I've had moments over the years where I thought I had made a big leap, only to be totally humbled the next time out, but for some reason this felt different. Was wondering if anyone else can identify.
Many thanks

good grappling is a mindset, sounds like you've changed your mindset which improved your grappling, keep it up!

Everyday you feel you did well, you progressed/broke through.
Everyday you feel you didn't do well at all, you progressed/broke through.
As long as you train, you will progress. The good days just feel better than the bad. Keep it up man.

That is what sports psychologists call the zone. That is why every time you enter your school you need to refresh and clear your mind. Mental blocks for training are different at certain levels. As a white belt your constantly preoccupied with whether your doing the right thing or not as a upper blue belt or purple you may be subconsciously thinking about bills or an argument with your wife or how much you hate your job. Time spent on the mat needs to be thought of as sacred, this is one area that traditional martial arts have the right idea.

i'll go with this.
even on days that all you did was get smashed you are still improving it's just not as noticeable.
For me, its usually teammates that notice my improvements more than myself. Im just out there having fun and i guess i have a weird mentality. For example right now im working on a sweet DLR pass but having a bit of a rough time. I got smashed so bad the other day but managed to hit this pass 2x and i felt like yea, what a good day lol
