I'd also recommend this DVD: long review up on my blog. Admittedly I got sent a review copy, but I tried to be objective. Still, the only real flaw I could see was that there wasn't a chapter menu, which means some of the longer sections are a little less convenient to navigate (e.g., rather than being able to click straight through to a particular choke in the 'chokes' section, you have to skip forward with your remote). Very impressive overall, especially if you're looking to work the basics.

I've seen the first part of the video and as a white belt I'd recommended it to other white belts. I imagine a lot of the instuction is lost on the more experienced guys here, but for someone who's just starting out, I found it quite helpful.

Just my two cents.

I'd agree but it really is more of a DVD for the niche group of beginers and I'm sure Roy Dean would tell you to go to any of Roy Harris DVDs if you wnated something more advanced

I was on the fence about getting this until I read a review on the UG about it and that won me over.

I just got Roy Deans BJJ Bluebelt DVD and here is my review:

I think this DVD is a great starting point for everyone who wants to learn BJJ. If you have ever asked yourself what are the basics what should I focus in my first years of BJJ the DVD will give you a good answer for.

Roy Dean is a BJJ blackbelt under Roy Harris and you can clearly see the influence of Roy in his own teaching style. He is very well spoken, articulate and precise. He shows everything slowly and with great detail so you really understand how a technique works.

Also fo me as a BJJ teacher this DVD is great because it gives you a good curiculum to teach the Basics to your students.

The DVD is not just about the typical groundwork like escapes and passes but also shows leglocks and takedowns. That´s maybe unusual within most BJJ schools but I think if you train in the "Harris line" you know that these techniques are als part of the basic blue belt curiculum.

At the end you also have some bonus stuff where Roy Dean shows a lot of combinations within the basic techniques. These combinations are also very clear and technical.

All in all I would say this DVD is great for students who want some reference material for the basics. If you train in a school and you are not sure about a basic guard pass or armlock you can easily get all the details from this DVD.

If you are a teacher this DVD will help you to find a good curiculum to teach your students the basics of BJJ.

Take care
Björn Friedrich

I'm pretty surprised he was doing leg locks on the blue belt DVD. I wish more people were 'pro leg lock'.

This guy explains things very well, but i don't think i'd want to train at his academy. It seems too TMA for me. I see all this pics of people bowing and kneeling during a blue belt promotion. When I get my blue belt they put it on me, then everyone took their belts off and whipped the shit out of me.

I am a Harris Blue Belt...

And yeah...Roy Harris is a huge fan of leg locks! So they are def a part of his style of teaching...and most of his instructors share his same passion (from my experience) or at least ensure that they train their students in leg locks (in addition to all other types of submissions).

Heelhooks are a big part of my game especailly from the bottom. One of Roy Harris's brown belts brad took me under his wing and showed them to me religously and for the first two years I was with Roy Harris we had a class devoted solely to leglocks.
My current instructor is a big leglock affionado as well. I really feel that in order to have a well rounded game you should be versed in at the very least leg lock defense and preferably offense as well. Especaily since a big part of leg loeck defense is making the other person resepct your ability to leglock so he dosen't just run amuck without fear of reprisal.

Seriously, what does that even mean? My BJJ school is run like a TMA school, and traditional martial arts are offered as well in other classes, and the bjj is top notch. What does running a school rooted in the customs of traditional martial arts have anything to do with the quality of instruction?
