Picking up on this, I think it also had a lot to do with a lack of true sparring.

There's just something about full sparring that really keeps an art honest.

That is my big worry, that if tradition starts to get messed with in whatever manner, and it is not talked about that it could lead to gradings getting all fucked up. I'm not saying a green belt is going to lead to this is how shit like this starts imo. My buddy had a black belt in TKD and in his closet its like a fucking rainbow of belts. Its a fucking joke, he got his BB in like 2 years. If this happens to BJJ I will cry.

Thats what I love about BJJ is that it is no fucking joke, it takes a long ass time to get promoted. I feel that if a person needs a green belt to stick around until blue then he shoudl fuck right off and quit like a bitch.

TAKE YOUR GOD DAMN STRIPES AND LIKE THEM.

Tradition! LMFAO

You can get a BB in Karate or Judo in a couple of years.
Does it make it a joke?
Nope.

The problem with you is that you do not understand that in most TMA BB is not a sign of being a master.

It is an American concept instead.
So you are applying your own values to someone else MA.
Maybe you should quit bitching!

I go to a school that has green belts. Our school has so many green and white belts, I think it is helpful for the owner to guage people on their way up to blue. He does not like to promote to blue until it is deserved.

This. Black belts in the asian mindset are just signs that you've learned the basics of the system and are ready to learn more advanced techniques. Westerners tend to believe black belts are signs of "mastery". Part of this is because of the "exoticness" of asian culture and so everything is placed at a higher level than it should be. BJJ, as far as I know, is the only system where black belt is a sign of mastery. People start schools in bjj at purple (I've been to one), whereas to open a school you must have a 4th degree bb in tkd from what i remember. Hell, the bujinkan goes up to 12th degree.

I agree.

This is why I always laugh when Ari Bolden call himself a Sensei on his website!
Sensei title are traditionally given to 4th Dan. LOL

In Asia, BB still do exam for their dans. they are NO masters!

yeah. I have a 1st degree in goju and one of my teachers was like "you're a sensei now" or something along those lines and i thought to myself... i'm only a sempai still. But i chose not to contradict him in fear of getting kicked in the groin. again. I know my sempai's sensei just ranked up to shihan, which is exciting. However, sensei (and equivalent) status is still scary because you can reach 4th degree bb in kukkiwon tkd by the age of 21. I don't know, I have a problem with calling a 21 year old that. I prefer just referring to my instructors, regardless of rank, by mr, sir, or just by their own regular name if they prefer. Formality is good for teaching discipline, but there's too much of a good thing going on.

If by American you mean both North and South America, then yeah.

Yeah, this is exactly why some people say that a blue belt in BJJ is more or less equivalent to a black belt in any other martial art. And in Asia, colored belts are for children (except in BJJ). I live in Korea, and if I were to walk into a Judo club and train for a couple months, the instructor would likely offer me a brown or even black belt JUST because I'm an adult.

An extremely "hard" douche....but still.
