I think it will always be a "TIME SPENT" topic, the more time you spend the better you are ... so if you are rolling for 2 hours 3 times a week your going to be better on the ground than someone practicing throws for 1 1/2 and ground for only 30 mins (typical judo class) ... but some ppl come from different backgrounds and excel quicker or better at certain things, then it becomes an individual person argument ... the bottom line is this kind of fight could go on forever ... just my opinion

I didn't submit either purple belt. I had about two years of Judo at the time, but still had my white belt. Takedowns and guard passing was how I won.

Serious judoka spend a lot of time in the weight room - mainly olympic lifts and other dynamic lifts. Power is a very big part of judo ... efficient use of power, mind you, but still power. It's like wrestling in that - in fact there's a lot of folks who start in one and go to the other.
As for the slam from guard ... that's against the rules (the ref should break it up as soon as you clear the ground), and will get you kicked out of most clubs I've ever heard of. It takes no skill, and has a high chance of neck injury.
Funny, on the net there are still judo vs bjj threads, but in every judo and bjj club I've been in there's nothing but mutual respect, and an increasing amount of crosstraining. It's like going to chemistry profs to learn chemistry, physics profs to learn physics - bjj are the ground specialists, judo the standing specialists, so why not learn each from the specialist?

I'm not sure how you percieved this thread, but I had no intent of bashing any style. I even stated that this was not a BJJ > Judo thread because obviously I'm crosstraining in both...

OK..heres an example of a bigger guy dominating a smaller guy, and this is in ADCC..go and see Mark Kerr vs. Mario Sperry...Mark was a purple belt at the time compared to Sperry's 15 + years of BJJ...
In this case, the threadstarter was better on the ground as far as technique and knowledge for the ground game goes...BUT, the judo black belt he rolled with knew some newaza and was bigger and stronger and was able to apply his technique in a more forceful way using his strength and power
Im sure you have been tapped by bigger guys seeing as how Kosen Judo is basically the same as BJJ, just add the judo throws
|
Sure, but i didnt whine about it. Alot of you BJJ guys love to brag everytime you beat a Judoka, but if they win, then it's always excuses as to why. If i get beat, the better guy won, period

In NAGA Miami I faced off with a Black belt in Judo first I met him in the No-Gi which it was intermediate Middleweight division I feel like my stand up is pretty good I was a wrestler in high school. Anyway he threw me a couple of times and won on a 4-0 points after the match he told me he was a black belt in Judo had been doing it for 15 years he was from Romania or some place where Judo is big. I met him later on in the Blue Belt division with the Gi and this time I picked his legs and took him down after getting him down he tried to stand back up but I got his back with one hook in and proceeded to win the match by the takedown I got so I got revenge but yea I agree on the ground he had good defense but I think overall all they really have is the throws. Advice attack the legs and watch for the throw try to roll through it.
