Slamming from guard is considered a DQ.

And even when you are cranking an armbar - if he can stand & lift you bodily off the mat the ref will restart from standing. So the trick is to STOP THEM STANDING UP - usually by grabbing their leg & making them fall over before they can lift you....

... I'm telling all our deepest judo secrets to BJJers - risking being barred from the secret judo society for ever.......

I go toe to toe against bjj blue belts as a judo brown.
But I think I'm a pretty strong newaza guy for judo.
Before my injury a couple months ago I was matched up against a judo black belt during newaza randori at the NAU Judo Club. It was very apparent quite quickly that I would be able to tool the guy. He had ZERO ground game. I literally thought: "Holy chit, this is one of those judo black belts that gets tapped by bjj whites."
Later that night, however, I rolled with David Huffman, a good friend, and judo black belt. We went all out in newaza and I was completely dominated.
It just depends, in judo groundwork, on the guy and his training background.

Just a question you obviously kept going for the submission did you get it or not? If not then I would say they definately did know how to escape, as slamming is an escape (but illegal), but is dangerous coz you have a good chance of a neck injury.

The reason they stop a judo match when someone lifts is because he is not allowed to slam (for safety) and is therefore deprived of a valid defense. So if you are lifted in judo you should stop the submission attempt with the understanding that he could have slammed you to escape. If you do not stop them your are sorta like saying "slam me if can"

Personally I would have explained the rules to you, if you kept doing it I would have slammed you as well preferably off the mat onto the concrete.... But then again i not often credited for my subtly.... hahaha

How? What else have you done? That is pretty damn impressive if just a white.

LOL @ getting tapped by a judo black belt. The shame!

< /sarcasm>

I don't think any judo players consider their ground game better than a BJJ player. It's a matter of time spent. They spend it standing, you spend it on the ground.

Simmer down son. How many times have I seen BJJ newbies on here post and brag about they tap bigger guys at frat parties all the time, and that BJJ works even against guys 30lbs bigger.

Yeh, tapping guys who dont know shit at frat parties..what an accomplishment!

OK..heres an example of a bigger guy dominating a smaller guy, and this is in ADCC..go and see Mark Kerr vs. Mario Sperry...Mark was a purple belt at the time compared to Sperry's 15 + years of BJJ...

In this case, the threadstarter was better on the ground as far as technique and knowledge for the ground game goes...BUT, the judo black belt he rolled with knew some newaza and was bigger and stronger and was able to apply his technique in a more forceful way using his strength and power

Im sure you have been tapped by bigger guys seeing as how Kosen Judo is basically the same as BJJ, just add the judo throws

This is one of the main reasons I stopped doing Judo and Jiu Jitsu, it's not practical for what I do.

Sure they're both great for learning a base for fighting, but when I fight, both my opponent and I are not wearing a gi, and we strike standing and on the ground. So I started freestyle and I'm much more content.

If you're just doing Judo or JJ competition then by all means stick with the gi and get some cross training in either sport, it will give you that lacking balance you couldn't get from just studying one form.
