cool thread, kinda differen't way of thinking about it. I like the idea of indicating sport BJJ, OR judo accomplishments away from the other ways of reaching a belt.

I am almost 40. But he is like a second father to me. He always encourages me when I want to compete and warns me not to compete when I am injured. He also encourages me to help assistant teach at the school with the beginners to make sure I have the basics down. He says it makes you a better student if you teach because you repeat the basics over and over and if you can explain it then you can do it. (Kinda like the jiu jitsu version of the Karate Kid movie which is really repetition plus earning the training.)
The plan for next year 2007 is for him, taking me and a few people to train in Brazil before the Senior / Master's Worlds. We are going to train at his dad (Helio) 's ranch in the mountains where all the Gracies/Machados/Valentes trained before each side went their own respective ways. We will be under the watchful eye of Helio and Relson and it just doesn't get any better for me than that.
Yes, he is awesome, where was this at?

I did not say who because it is internet fodder which Gracie is known for that. Stick around here enough and you will see which ones. I have never said it myself.
Renzo is my buddy. I trained with him in Hawaii before the BJ Penn fight last year and he gave me and three other Relson's students a private lesson for free that I will never forget. I got pics with him and he even signed my book "Mastering Jiu Jitsu". Renzo loves Relson.
I also partied with Ze' after I won the Hawaii NAGAs in 2004. People from Renzo's school know that have posted here know this already. Ze' ref'd that event (not mine) and then came to the after party at Relson's house. Other sherdoggers from Renzo's school that post here know that me and Ze' had a hell of a time while he was in Hawaii. If you train there ask Ze' or Renzo about me "Bob" the big blue belt at Relson's in Hawaii.
Renzo is considered Relson's little brother even though he is a cousin because they hanged out a lot while growing up and fought together in the streets of Brazil. All Renzo's students are welcome at our school and as far as I know they do not pay any drop in fee.
Renzo is the real deal.
Renzo's guys know I feel this way already.

oh nah, i heard renzos a good guy and stuff...i was just wondering who was meant in the gracie family to "hand the belts out like candy"..i thought about it and couldnt think of no one, and I know theres quite a few renzo blackbelts so I thought maybe they meant him..if someone wants to pm me and tell me who is meant id appreciate it since i know you dont want to blow up any names online and i wont say a word..

a black belt is a black belt. BJJ is about the black belt.. the other "degrees" is just frosting.

Although its very hard, once earned, the Relson Gracie black belt can have the full respect from everyone that he knows all the self defense, weapons, clinches, punches, kicks, gi and no gi that Relson teaches. Just ask Phil Cardella, the last blackbelt who competes in mma
|
This seems to be the defining statement of the thread. In other words one belt would repsresent BJJ as trained for sport grappling, another as trained for leisure but not compete and the 3rd trained for sport and street and MMA.
I dont think it is practical and honestly I dont think it really matters. Honestly I cannot asses this in an intelligent manner without seeing the training.
Is the MMA/street guy THAT much more effective in a fight than the sub grappler guy?
If they are training the same amount of time who is ACTUALLY the better BJJ guy? The one ONLY training for grappling or the one taking a day or 2 here and there to work kickboxing instead of grappling?
It way to confusing for me to anser behind a computer screen but there are at least a couple of my concerns.
