BJJ Belt Division Questions

Divisions are by weight and belt IRCC. So my question is can a Brown Belt fight up a belt division (i.e. Black Belt)?

If not why not? And would you BJJ guys like to be able to fight up a division?

If you can fight up a division are there any restrictions? Or are the division Brown Belt and under etc?

Just curious

No, we cant do that. At least not in organized tournaments...some very unorganized tournaments even have women and men competing in the same bracket.

I wouldnt fight up a division just for the simple fact I would like to get more experience in my belt level and compete at my belt..getting the next belt means you are at the level of the belt you receive. BUT, nothing wrong with going up a division and see where you need more work on to get the next belt, though..that is done in organized competitions.

Thanks for the info.

It is interesting why do you think they don't open up the Black Belt Division to anyone who wants to enter? Same as judo. I am sure there must be some good brown belts who could beat a few black belts?

Oh well.... I guess we are never gonna see that youtube clip of a judo blue belt beating a BJJ Black Belt in a BJJ Comp (sarcasm).

i think in the organized tourneys, only why to "test" your abilities would be going to open weight division, but are they divided in belt level too? or only available to black belts?

Open weight divisions are divided by belt and age. BUT, there is no open division for blue belt juveniles Good thing im competing in the adult division at Gracie Worlds

I'm not sure what BJJ tournaments you guys compete in where you can't fight up a division. Every one I have ever been to allows you to fight up. I wore a white belt and fought in the blue belt division two months ago and nobody batted an eye.

You can also definitely fight up a division in judo. In fact, in the serious judo tournaments there are no skill divisions. It is simply divided by weight.

Is BJJ the only sport that has World Championships for different skill levels? I find it a little strange to say I am a World Champion Beginner (White Belt). What is to stop people from avoiding gradings in order to win a World Champs at a lower Belt Division?

Its called sandbagging..ehh..the instructor sees that his guy is dominating everybody at brown belt comps and decides hes ready for his black..but, the worlds are coming up and even though his guy is ready for the black belt...he waits til after his guy wins the world championships and THEN gives him his black. The same can be said with all belts as well.
