To the thread starter.... The Chicago area is a big area, with quite a few places to train. Next time, state where in the area you live, for example "in the city", "south suburbs", "west suburbs", heck even NW Indiana is considered part of Chicagoland. Just my opinion.

Curran martial arts is in Crystal Lake. It is far northwest. They have good bjj, but even more important a lot of mid level and some good high level belts. Some places are run by someone with a black belt, but have a ton of white belts and not a lot of purple level guys, or sometimes even blue belts.(like when I went to Carlson's).

FLO martial arts is in Palatine and that is where Shonie Carter teaches and also Terry Martin trains there. They have supposedly a 8 or 10 time world bjj champion for bjj.

I know Gilbert Grappling has the guida bros. Enough said.

I train with Jay Valko at valkobjj.com. It is a great school. I started with Royce, then switched to the Machados, spent the last 8 years with Gracie Barra and have trained at Valkobjj for about a year. I have to say I am having the most fun and best training now, Jay used to teach for Carlson Gracie and shows so much awesome technique.

We have a free trial offer you can come in and train and meet the guys, plus we do a ton of gi, no-gi, boxing and wrestling training.

Its a good mix of experienced guys plus beginners and its a newer Gym so the classes are still reasonably sized so you get good personal attention.

Here I got ya bro.

Carlson Gracie is in Chicago.

Brazilian Top Team has a place in Chicago.

POW is in Chicago.

Jeff Neal (a Carlson Gracie blackbelt) has a place in Naperville.

Shidokan is in Chicago.

Gilbert Grappling in Mokena.

Superkicks Kung Fu is in Plainfield. (the instructor is the champ at Total Fight Challenge)

LA Boxing is opening in Orland Park in like 2 weeks.

My favorite gyms of those are:

Jeff Neal, Shidokan, Superkicks, and LA Boxing.

Jeff Neal is pure solid guy. Great BJJ, and good Boxing.

Shidokan is pretty badass. They have guys who do well in Muay Thai, grappling, ect.

I train at Superkicks. Good striking, and also good groundwork. The main teacher (sifu) is the Total Fight Challenge Bantamweight Champ.

I'm also going to be training at LA Boxing in Orland. Good teachers in their respective style. Much more combat orientated then most LA Boxing gyms. BJJ, Muay Thai, Savate, and Boxing.

Left out from the list above is New Breed Jiu Jitsu. www.newbreedchicago.com

For Jiu Jitsu and grappling they have done well in the Midwest and Nationally. We won NAGA 2006 and 2007.

There are a lot of good gyms in the Chicagoland area. But to find specific ones you just need to state where you are located and/or if you are willing to travel.

Arlovski used to come in to one of the bars I used to bounce at. His friend worked with me. AA is a huge dude. Nice enough guy too.
He does train at POW or at least did. Dino the BJJ instructor is bad ass from what I understand from talking to people. That place may be where to go. I think it is expensive though.
