I doubt they wear them. This is just speculation however. Some tounrneys don't let you wear them.

Just wanted to share a little story that sort of touches on this. Years ago we had Oleg taktarov come out to the school for a seminar. One of this techniques he taught was a knee bar. We drilled it for awhile then one of the guys asked how you keep from crushing you balls when you perform the kneebar. Oleg thought for a second and then said (in his broken english), "I will show you how I learned. Stand up.. like military you know?" and me mimes standing at attention. So the guy stands at attention and Oleg starts to pace back and forth infront of. He starts to talk about being lined up during class and his instructor pacing and yelling at all the students. As he walks by he whacks the guy(lightly) in the balls, with his hand. As the guy flinches and covers up, he shrugs and says" you just learn".
It is a hell of a lot funnier in his broken english and that stoic russian face of his.

that makes absolutely no sense, but i'll believe it was cool b/c it was Taktarov.

For the sake of your training partners, consider a cup.

that's correct, in keeping with proper technique, always finish the armbar by pinching the arm between your balls- i mean legs

I disagree. It should definitely be a pair of Winning Gloves!

Essentially he was clowing the guy but because he has the impassive russian face it was the perfect deadpan. Add the russian accent and it was hilarious.

I cannot believe people still aren't wearing cups. Maybe it's a gi thing. All the no gi guys in my gym wear cups. We also use combat base and without cups, that will inevitably lead to some scrambled eggs.
