Arm bar escape (name?)

i first saw it used by Mayhem against GSP, and then Serra used it against Karo. kind of brake away from the opponent and turn upside down. maybe it doesnt even have a name, but ive been trying it and cant seem to get it down.

I've heard it called all kinds of names, the one i use and hear the most often is the "Hitchhiker Escape" because you turn your hand similar to the way you would if you were hitchhiking.

We call it the hitchhiker escape or the "Rich Franklin escape", as our teammate Rich used it against Travis Lutter in the UFC.

I remember Rich pulling thtis off. I've done it a little bit and been successfull as long as guys aren't very technical with their armbars.

I've heard it's pretty dangerous and should be a last resort/important type of competition type thing. I usually tap pretty quickly in training/practice.

well there's 2 different versions... there's the clean well timed version in which you you release your grip and hit the escape on your terms, and there's the "Oh ****, he caught me, but I don't want to tap" version in which you're going to get hurt, but you can also get out and still win the fight like Rich Franklyn did.

If you know the move, and have drilled it properly, and aren't stubborn about tapping then it's completely safe in training. just make sure you drill it first so you don't screw up and roll the wrong way because then you will hurt yourself.
