So how do you propose we determine rank at a no-gi tournament? If a no-gi tournament is separated by rank...a rank determined by your instructor?

Why would he need a purple gi if he already has a purple belt? The purple BELT tells you his rank. Everyone standing around at a no-gi tournament in board shorts and different colored shirt confuses the issue. A counter analogy would be...that's like have a BJJ tournament where everyone wheres whatever color belt they want.

Rediculous.

You roll in "purple belt tournaments"? Or you roll in no-gi tournaments in the purple belt division? Because most tournaments I've seen are all belts. Separated by rank. So, no, in most cases, if you aren't walking around with anything to classify you as a purple belt, I CAN'T figure it out. Because there are all kinds of ranks walking around. And multiple mats. And lots of noise. And plenty of other shit going on.
Again the only real argument I have for this is "they" want to sell you "their" rash guard. They don't sell me a belt for a gi tourny? I already have one. If they would just give an "equipment required" section in the rules we could all go get whatever rash guard we want. If they state that it also has to indicate your belt rank in some way, fine. To me it's just like all the gi tournaments in that regard.
And, in my opinion, this can ONLY help. Maybe your a blue and you've been called to your mat but you have awhile before you roll. One of your buddies is a purple so you head over to talk to him before his roll. While your away the blues start but you don't know because your talking to your buddy. If everyone is wearing random crap no one has any clue as to your rank. But if you are wearing a blue rash guard some random guy may go, "hey bro, the blues have started, you might want to get back."
"Whoa! Thanks dude." I just don't see why it's even an issue...except for King Carlos trying to make his buck off it.
