I think there is a huge difference in USA. I have seen numerous gyms that call it muay thai kickboxing when it should really be called kickboxing. Wearing muay thai shorts does not mean you are learnining muay thai.

Do you overwork the clinch? Do you spar with elbows? Where did your instructor learn muay thai? When you are ready will your kru teach you the wai kru? What style of muay thai are you learning? If you answered no to any of these I call it kickboxing. I am not saying it is bad, but they are two different things. It depends on why you are learning and how you are going to apply it.

I don't know exactly what you mean by "muay Thai kickboxing," but we have the following categories:

Muay Thai - full rules (8 stikes, any legal target)
Modified muay Thai - Muay Thai with no elbows or knees to the face
Low Kick Kickboxing - kickboxing (no elbows, knees) with low kicks allowed
Kickboxing - punching and kicking with no kicks below the waist

Most beginning fighters start in modified and then move up after a few fights.

yeah sparring with elbows is a little much man. working them in drills and on the heavy bag is one thing, but blasting your sparring partner in the face with one is a good way to ruin the night

but yeah if you dont work the clinch and if your body doesnt feel battered and bruised after you leave the gym that day, i think you might want to reconsider your school
