No, Muay means boxing or martial art, and thai is well, thai. Thais call any martial art muay, for example, Kung Fu is Muay Jeen, Jeen meaning Chinese

To answer TS' question, its the same thing. Thai people just don't say kickboxing...

The only nonring form of muay thai is apparently the ancient art of muay thai that was meant for direct combat called Muay Boran. The styles are very similar in that they both use elbow and knee techniques on top of punchs and kicks. But Dont try and find a Muay Boran skool just yet, i beleive its only taught in thailand seldomly, even there its hard to find.

Mung yaa guan teen woi. Rai kon reak gang-foo "muay jeen". Ajarn guu, KruPraeng (roo chak mai? Ajarn Muay Chaiya) reak mun "muay jeen". Muay chak prataet eun cheu "muay tangchat". Muay Thai kor keu Muay kong Muang Thai.

No-one uses "thai" as meaning "free" in Muay Thai.

I am learning Muay Boran, Muay Chaiya specifically. My teacher KruPraeng is the last surviving grandmaster of Muay Chaiya. He's interested in coming to Canada.
