running is for cowards. (except when jumped by 3 or more people, gigantic size differences, or when a weapon is used).
Kick the other persons ass. Choke his ass out. Get'r done, don't run!
Self-offense is a much more reliable skill than self-defense.

Other than that anything goes and your right most people don't want to spar in Karate if you don't want to spar GTFO!
In TKD and WC we have specific sparring classes so if you don't want to spar don't attend on those day's

i am surprised no one has pointed out what complete crap this is.
your straight out lying.
full elbows, head stomps, you should right fiction novels.
if you guys spar like that everyday and fail to kill each other, your art is seriously lacking.
i'm sure you vave some stories to tell without resorting to bullshit.

I trained in Ninjutsu.. I have a white belt in it(which i had to earn. You don't start with a belt). I was close to getting getting my 8th kyu(which was a green belt), but I stopped.
I now train in BJJ. Ninjutu's hand to hand combat is basically traditional JJJ. That being said, a lot of techniques don't transfer over well into real life, or in sport bjj that i train now.
Also, being that there's a lot more live rolling, I'm more capable of executing a lot of the techniques I'm taught in bjj in a real life setting. Although, i wouldnt want to go to the ground in a fight, I can use my knowledge of throws and keeping a guy off balance to control the fight while standing. Punching is a pretty natural thing to do, although, muay thai or kickboxing would be great to cross train in. If I do get taken to the ground, I can use my bjj training to get to my feet as quickly as possible.
As for the use of weapons, we were taught how to use traditional weapons with the idea of finding similar weaponry when in a fight. For instance, you can use your keys to disable someone. You can adapt your knife fighting with the keys, or using a news paper instead of a kali stick, etc...
I did learn some cool stuff in Ninjutsu... but for as far as overall effectiveness, i'd go with BJJ. Ninjutsu is at times at bit too traditional, even though you do learn ground technique. I feel BJJ's training methods are better. Although, there are knive, gun and other disarms - im not too sure about their effectiveness. On top of that, the real trick to disarming someone is controlling the weapon. You basically grab it, and then try to break the grip by turning it towards the fingers. The whole crap about hitting someone's hand and the weapon flies out doesn't work too often.
Check out a ninjutsu school. If there's no sparring, it's not going to do much for you.

Full contact elbows? Like it was said earlier if you spar full force with elbows and fail to seriously injure each other on a regular basis you guys must be pussies.

I agree lol. You must be landing with your forearms a lot because when I see clean elbows it leaves the nastiest cut in the world that will never heal properly.

I took an accidental elbow while rolling the other day. My nose still hurts. Luckily it's not broken.

Point. To be honest, the stance was used for Kodatchi and the like. But it does have knife applications as well. My sensei was big on knife disarment, and he said by showing your knife, you give a skilled individual the opportunity to gage the distance and to see when the strike is coming. These are the necesentials to knife disarment. By hiding the knife, its very difficult to disarm or to know which angle the strike will come for that matter. The bottom line is the inability for the opponent to know when he is in range to be cut or not. If you show be your knife, I know if I am in your range, because I am looking dead at it. Further more, you don't konw how long my knife is (they aren't always the same size). So you are standing in front of me, thinking all is good, when in actuallity, you are in my range to get slashed.

Calm down Mr. Baddass. I could kick peoples asses by being defensive and counter striking rather than barging in like an idiot.
Does your git er done attitude apply to tai chi as well?
