Diego was flawed, both as a man and a Fighter. Too much guts for his own good in the latter part of his career, a little chinny, but excellent recovery and pure Boxing ability. But unfortunately his career was built solely on his ability to knock people out, thus, never profiling his talent for actual skills (once you construct a fighter this way it's tough to change them). But for heart, for willingness to walk through Hell to win, beligerent courage, there were few better. And in 2005 he solidified himself for one moment as the absolute best of the 135lb division by unifying the Titles against Jose Luis Castillo in probably the best Title Fight of the last 10 years.
You can all learn something from Chico, if anything something about not quitting when given every opportinity to.
Training for his Championship fight against Joel Casamayor, this series is where he seperated himself from the pack:

Spot on with the analysis KK, as always, but I have to disagree with the overall "tone" of the message. I don't see anything wrong with the type of fighter he was, and I don't have a problem glorifying him as one of the better fighters of the time. We can't all be the pound-for-pound best, and you shouldn't have to even want to be to be appreciated. But when you conduct yourself the way Diego did in the ring, not to mention after the fight (Castillo I in particular) then I don't feel that anything can be taken away from you. He had a career that any fighter worth his salt could be proud of, and I don't really see any reason why he would have wanted to do anything differently if he could. IDK, maybe the whiskey is making things appear between the lines of your post that aren't really there. Or maybe I am just reading too much into what you said.
Either way, awesome footage (again as usual) and thanks for the post.

If he did things differently he wouldn't have ended up on the floor as much as he did, and he wouldn't have been a little punchy towards the end. That's not taking away from anything he did, it's just the truth. Watch the Castillo fight and take special notice of the portions of the fight when Chico stayed on the outside and Boxed. He landed A LOT on Castillo without getting hit too much. He could have done that all night and beaten Castillo easily. Same thing with Casamayor in th first fight. He didn't have to always go forehead to forehead and brawl, even if it WAS entertaining. He was a better fighter than that and few people knew about it because he almost never could resist brawling when it was in his best interest to.

Agreed. He took much more punishment in his fights with Castillo then he needed to. I guess he just liked to stay in the pocket, even if it was costing him. Still a great fighter though with more heart and toughness than most.

been my favorite fighter since i was about 13 yrs old and i first saw him knock out john brown on hbo.
the end of his career was not what he deserved and it was clearly not the story book ending, he couldnt make 135 anymore and that was the problem he couldnt fight any higher and bring his power with him.
my 5 favorite moments in boxing since i have been alive...hes 3 of them. vs acelino freitas, vs castillo, vs casamayor when his mouth piece went thru his lip and he was so pissed about them stopping it. thats the kind of fighter he was.
rip
