the testing consists of demonstration of proper technique with elbows, knees, punches, kicks, etc. also, master chai will work with you on the focus mitts on combos and counters. this part usually sucks because even at roughly 60 years old he's still fast, but its his timing that is really his strong point. you really have to be on your game when you are in the ring with him. then you have to perform the wai kru, the ceremonial dance. typically master chai will pay close attention to you throughout the weekend seminar too if he knows you are testing.
then comes the part that most people remember and talk about after the test. you have to go two 3 minute rounds in the ring with a holder. the holder has a belly pad, thai pads and shin protectors on. you have to achieve a set number of kicks and knees within the 3 minutes. i think its something like 60 kicks and 50 knees, but i can't remember exactly right now. it sounds easy if you were to just kick and knee, but the holder is allowed to basically do anything they want to keep you from doing so including kicks to the leg, mid, and head. they can also punch to body and face. so basically you are in a thai boxing match only you aren't allowed to hurt your opponent and slow him/her down, but they can beat the crap out of you.
don't get the full number of kicks and knees in and you fail. get KTFO, you fail. take too many shots to the leg and can't continue, you fail.
i've seen a lot of tests and have seen many people fail and some in the worst way aka KO. saw one last year where my buddy took a vicious kick to the mid section and went down. the scream/gurgle/wimper sound he made when he took that shot i've never heard before or since. he went straight to the ground. however, he showed real guts and got back up and finished the test. he actually didn't get the number of kicks in he needed, but master chai passed him anyway because of the determination he showed. seriously, after he got back up he almost couldn't raise his legs to kick because it hurt so much, but did it anyway. i think we even found out later he cracked something.
