Superman punch
I have been a practitioner of the martial arts for 18+ years and have for the past 3 years been consistently training in the MMA world. I have had to get used to a less structured system (The MMA) but, I have come to love it over the years, however... This self proclaimed "superman punch" just doesn't add up. Anybody who has done stand up and, has been tested knows that you never lead a punch with your face and open yourself up like that and, any grappler that can shoot the legs sees a banner opportunity to take the fight in a different direction. There is a superman jab too! I won't short change the punch because there is always more room in the toolbox but, is there really any benefit to the punch otherwise? Not knockin' it but, I am teachable so if anyone can enlighten me?

YouTube - Yves Edwards - Superman Punch
GSP had a better video out(he uses it most effectively in MMA IMO), but I couldn't find it. You can also set them up with straight kicks, which I personally prefer.

GSP is the best at this I think. Looks like he sets them up off of kicks as well

It really throws off your opponent and a lot of people don't see it coming. Its not exactly something thrown for a KO, but its good enough to confuse your opponent which will in the long run allow you to land better shots. I land those clean all the time in sparring.

^this^ i set them up with front kicks to see if hands drop...gotta sell them sometimes...they work great and you can get a CLEAN headshot...and never leave your face unprotected, you never lead with it, thats what the other hand is for

I personally don't like and won't use the superman punch however it was explained to me as something that you set up, it's almost like a fake kick into a punch.....

Tonight I sparred a guy from a different gym for the first time and he used superman punches alot. He actually used them very well. I stuffed him several times, sometimes just sticking my foot out and letting him jump into it. But on other guys i watched him spar with, he used them a little more successfully.
Personally, I like them. Although, I have ditched them lately. I just kinda don't think to use them as much and plus it's not been real high percentage lately.

it works very well. superman punch is just a watered down name for it.
its called a ghost. I can land it very well as I am a left handed person who fights right handed. so my left hand is naturally strong. I prefer the jab over the cross.
it works well for say, jab cross and they back up, ghost, to rear leg headkick..
the key to that punch is make it look like your going to kick so they drop their hands.

The video basically nailed it, its not meant to be thrown blindly but needs to be set up and opens up options for both grappling and striking.
