Icon4 Suggestions for a starter?

Hello, im new to the MMA scene, been watching it for a while now on TV and been to a few fights in my town. I have decided that this summer, instead of getting a job, I want to start MMA at 1 of the 2 local places. For a 15 year old whos 6'3" and around 180lbs, what kind of style should I start off with? Also, I have very little martial arts experience (few years when I was younger) so if you have any tips to share they would be greatly appreciated.

Remember this: you don't choose your fighting style, your fighting style chooses you.

The only thing you can do as a complete begginner is to train. Just go check out the gyms and train. And this just my personal opinion, but I think you should focus a lot on wrestling.

Yeah I've boxed for years, but i started training muay thai, bjj and mma.

Now in a fight, I don't want to stand even though I can stand with most people I want to take it down, my favorite is side mount dropping elbows, but I feel comfortable all over on the ground.

I just feel better on the ground the chance of a lucky blow is more rare.

If your wanting to compete in MMA fights, your best off training 2 different types, 1 stand up and 1 ground fighting. muay thai/boxing are good starters, i can guarentee you WILL find it extremely hard at first, but all you can do is keep on going to the training sessions and eventually it will all start coming together. for ground work brazilian ju-jitsu and wrestling are probably your best bet as rinksterk said earlier. you need to remember its a long hard process to finally start competing, dont be one of the gym rats who turn up thinking their chuck liddel and end up never coming back again. train hard, work on your cardio and pay attention to your instructor and you cant go that far wrong. good luck.

Youre a big boy. When you first go to practice, PLEASE don't be out to hurt somone. You probably have learned that through traditional martial arts training, but a lot of people loose their composure when they first enter a gym.

Your not tough, your not the big man on campus, and everyone at your gym can kick the living shit out of you. You have to come to accept it. Its not saying that you cant improve, but dont go in as a bolsterous asshole that thinks he knows everything and spazzes out and hurts people. I don't know if this is your personality--but just keep in mind you are there to learn, not to show off.

The rest will come from the trainer, good luck buddy.
