After decent stikes... My face swells!
Hello everyone. I have a question for yall. Okay, anytime I take any decent strikes to my head, the bone areas swell. For instance, yesterday while sparring, I was headkicked twice & headbutted once(through an accidental clinch head clash). Today, I have 4 slighty raised, swell-marks all on my forehead where I was hit(not sure where the 4th mark came from).
Once, I was absolutely NAILED on my right cheek w/ a baseball bat. My cheek swelled to the size of a golfball that time. I even think my cheekbone might have been cracked/broken. It also bruised very badly, though I NEVER bruise.
Anyways, I swell like Loiseau versus Franklin, though certainly not nearly as bad, but that's what I mean by swell. Like I said, it only does it on the bone areas(cheeks & forehead). My face never bleeds & has only bruised once, but swells often. So, my question is obviously, "Why does my face swell like that & why does my face swell when I don't see the same thing happening to others?" Thanks guys, appreciate it.

Awesome! Good, that makes me feel better. I guess I just assumed everyone else didn't swell like me, since they never said anything about it. Thanks.
On another note, it's absolutely rediculous that I would have to spar w/ a 6'4", 240 lb.er w/ 11 years experience under his belt, when I am merely 5'6-7", 130 lbs.ish, & only 2 years experience. No wonder I have so many swell-marks this time compared to normal. I have never been jabbed in the head so many freakin' times in my whole life! /Rant

Just curious: Is there no one closer to your size that you can spar with? Experiance wise you want to spar with someone that has been around but size wise that sounds kind of odd.
Also have you tried a coldpack after sparring?

Yeah, there certainly is. It's just we were changin' partners & I had some probs. w/ the Velcro on my gloves I was trying' to hurry & fix. I got it fixed, but by that time everyone else was done paired up. So, I got stuck w/ Goliath .
As for the ice pack, nah... I've always tried to just tough it out. I do get in the hot-tube @ my house after every training session to help relax & restore my muscles a bit. Thanks though.

Hot tub won't help your swelling, pal. Ice it down, the swelling will dimish somewhat.
Also, some ibuprofen (e.g. Advil, Motrin) will help slightly.
What you're experiencing is completely normal. Spar someone your size next time.

Yeah, I know. I never said anything about it helping my swelling though, just to help relax my muscles & take away some of the soreness. But yeah, I will ice it down some. & yeah, I will def. be trying to spar someone more along the lines of my size next time. Ty for the advice.

Well, ya know, after watching MMA since God know's how long now, & training in boxing, muay thai, sambo, bjj, & wrestling, I have only seen people's faces swell like mine so many times. I just don't ever really see anyone swell like that, so I just assumed other's didn't, like me. I mean, how often do you see people swell up like Loiseau? I don't often, so I figured I was an exception.

it does sound a bit extreme. i dont know how long youve been training, but your body does get used to being hit. I never noticed swelling to the extent youre talking about, but when i first started, i was much more susceptible to nose bleeds and cut lips. Punches just seemed sharper also. My training parter used to refer to it as microevolution, in that youre whole body just seems to get tougher. its not just from gaining muscle, your skin gets tougher, it almost seems like the bones get denser as well. I dont know if theres any science behind that, but it definetely describes the feeling
