Actually I just read it and Kyryllo said the same thing I said except that experienced fighter may only glance over the shoulder out of the corner of the eye.

If you begin to learn the kick you should look over the shoulder on your target, it is more a control if your leg realy does what it should. However you should not even think about using it untill you can throw it blind. The foot should be faster than your own eye, by the point you actualy manage to turn your head the foot went over 3/4 of it's way already, there's no way you actiualy could have time on fucusing on the target without thwarting your kick.

When I do the back kick, I look at the target just as I'm about to hit it. It's more of "balance" thing than "look where I'm kicking" thing.
The reasoning behind "look so you can see your target" is flawed, because a back kick should take about 0.3 seconds or less from the time you start it till it lands. You do not have enough time to adjust anything in this time. You see the opening and you seize the moment.
The problem with turning the head before kicking is that you tend to lead the kick with your shoulders, with your hips following later. It not only telegraphs the kick, it also makes it slower and far less powerful.
BTW, congrats on the fighter tag, cbdk.

tough kick to get good at, it is all in the rotation and setup. Make sure that you keep your leg in tight to you as you spin and look at the target before extending the kick. If you get good at this one, it is arguably the most devastating kick to have, so much power.
