The biggest reason you dont see it utilized is because its difficult to throw a proper sidekick. Many schools dont teach a proper sidekick, rather they teach a side pushing kick which is basically a variation on the front pushing kick.

A proper sidekick even if it s taught correctly is very difficult to master, and really only works one way. The rear-leg sidekick is worthless, too easy to read. Theres really only 1 or maybe 2 ways to throw it so that its effective, and even then, if your partner can read it, it can be parried easily or grabbed and they will take your back.
