Back kick tutorial.

Here's the back kick tutorial I made.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63M3QrYtGN0

Two "versions": Basic and Attacking

Step by Step

Basics:
1.Turn around till your back is facing the target

2.Bend your upper body down and bring your wieght on your supporting leg, while sticking your butt in the direction of the target

(The basic techniques also incluedes turning the head and looking at the target over the shoulder on the kicking side at this point, however experienced fighters tend not to look at all or just glance with the corner of the eye)

3.Chamber the leg by bending the knee as far as you can, the heel should point at the target, the knee MUST point down

4.Straighten your leg in a pushing motion towards the target

5.Impact happens with the flat foot or (better) with the heel.

Advanced, Attacking back kick:
Bounce forward to bring the weight above the front (later supporting) leg, at the same time perform the steps 1.-3. simultaneously

Points 4.+5. are obviously the same as in the basic technique.

You may slide on the supporting leg while performing it to gain distance but make sure to have a solid stand at the point of impact.

Important points:
knee MUST point down, back MUST face the target

head MAY turn around and look over the shoulder

the upper body SHOULD be bent, it improves the stability by bringing the center of gravity down and stops the rotating motion, it also gives you more power since the center of gravity is closer to the force vector and it is simply easier to raise the leg that way. However you can throw the kick standing upright, I wouldn't recomand it though.

follows in the next days: Jumping Back kick; tornado kick
next weeks: footwork vol 2; jumping spin hook kick; standng hook kick

Planed: round house kick technical comparison. Need volunteers!!!

Just noticed that you're rocking back on your before and the ball of your foot's coming off the ground before you extend (while you're still in your tuck) when you're breaking down the movements and going slow. Like I said, small nitpick.

Looks pretty good Kyryllo (not that this is unusual or anything).

Though if I may contribute my $.02: it does not appear as though you're looking in the direction of the target when kicking. It's generally a good idea to have your head all the way around so as to have your target clearly in your line of sight by the time you've pivoted around and chambering the kick; thus, if your opponent moves you can adjust as necessary (such as pulling the kick and following through with a different one more suitable one, or simply advancing in the direction of your opponent).

It also looks to me like you're leaningback quite a bit when the kick is completed. I'd not go so far as to say this is "wrong" since subtleties in technique vary widely (and if you're throwing it high, it's necessary). Though you may wish to try limiting how much your upper body is leaning back when throwing a spinning back-kick at torso level; I think you may find that it gives you better balance and improves the speed and stability of any kicks you follow it up with.

I also peeped your Brazilian kick tutorial. You know, in all this time and as much as I've heard of it, I don't recall ever having seen one thrown. Funny thing is that I hit upon the idea of throwing pretty much that exact kick over 10 years ago (setting up as though for a front snap/thrusting kick and then turning my hips over and connecting with the roundhouse) and used it to pretty good effect in sparring.

All this time I thought I'd invented my own signature technique ("The Gregster Kick") and it turns out to be in wide sue. Rats!
