Review! Lyoto Machida: Machida-Do Karate for Mixed Martial Arts
Lyoto Machida: Machida-Do Karate for Mixed Martial Arts. with Erich Krauss and Glen Cordoza
So I haven't received anything from Erich Krauss in quite some time. This was an average Monday, that quickly gained a very shiny, silver lining. The door bell rings. It's the mail man, and he means business! So he hands me a package, and when I see the address, I have to admit, it was like Christmas. opening it with a fervor that I rarely approach anything with, I see it. Lyoto Machida has a new DVD series, and it's in my hands! Lets get started.
This is a 4 DVD box set.
DVD 1 "Movement and Fundamental Strikes". So we're off to a great start. Why? Because Machida's Myspace address isn't plastered across the screen! If you've seen Victory Belt's Rubber Guard DVDs, you know what I'm talking about. All kidding aside, so far I'm very impressed with the production quality. So Machida and his partner are in traditional karate gis, complete with black belts around their waists. He follows through a short warm up, and then goes on to basic stances and foot work. This is likely very different than anything you've seen before, unless you've been around traditional karate for any length of time. Machida's footwork is very unique, and must be witnessed to be understood. He seems to encourage the use of both south paw and orthodox stances. He goes over some movements unique to karate, such as tai-sabaki, and certain styles of skipping steps. He then goes over basic kicks and punches, all very "Machida style" karate. Very cool, very impressed.
DVD 2 "Striking Attacks and Takedowns". I'm really enjoying the uniqeness of information on these DVDs. This one shows a nice solo stretching routine, followed by various (really weird/unorthodox) combinations. One thing that really stuck out to me is the fact that they show all of the combos on a partner and on focus mitts. He also shows a ton of vary karate flavored combinations for thai pad and focus mitt training. Possibly the coolest part of this DVD are the takedowns. All I'm gonna say is "weird", but after watching Machida's highlights, I realized that he really uses all of this stuff IN HIS FIGHTS. I can't overstate this, due to the fact that most instructionals are just a loose pile of moves. Watching this, I really get a sense for Machida's fighting style.
DVD 3 “Intercepting Attacks, Takedown Defense, and The Clinch”. An awesome, partner assisted stretching routine. Lyoto explains his defensive philosophy, which I found very interesting! He goes on to show a bunch of counters to strikes and takedowns, then a bunch of clinch work…not going to give too much away.
DVD 4 “The Ground Game”. This dvd is somewhat basic in parts but I really enjoyed it. Its not just grappling, it shows a lot of awesome ground and pound strategies, passes, sweeps, escapes, everything under the sun.
I’ve watched this whole series now and I can’t say enough good things, I really enjoyed it. Thanks for reading guys. Sorry the last two dvd reviews being so late, and so short, but I’ve been amazingly busy.
Until next time!
