Question on fighting taller opponent

Hi guys,

I've a fight in 3 weeks and I just found out a bit more about my opponent. I'm 6"3 and he is 6"6. Apparently he has decent enough hands (especially his jab) and a good Thai clinch.

I'm a muay-thai guy myself, comfortable kickin and punching and I've a good ground game. I'm looking to either set up takedowns or use my Muay-Thai but I haven't a guge amount of experience sparring with taller fighters....obviously it's harder to find training partners.

Any tips from you guys?! I'm gonna try to stay busy and keep moving, leg kick, in and then out.

It depends on your reach against his. Normally taller guys have a longer reach which keeps you at a distance but if yours is longer that may be to your advantage with strikeing. Usually when I fight taller guys I stay on the defensive, Usually bob and weave and countering works best for me. Also going to the ground will alow you to use leverage against him. If your really offensive just try to get inside so his height and reach arnt worth anything and use your mauy thai knees and elbows to do damage. Hope this helps.

Im pretty short 5'9 so i usually spar with taller people. Get in close and stay close. This will nuetralize his punches. if you have a longer reach though then the height probably wont matter

tyson was good at this, as he is 5 10 and usually fought taller opponents.

He had a good jab, and as he was stepping in he was bobbing and weaving. His signature punch for quite some time was to do the above and then come up with a left hook to the head.
Knocked a lot of guys out with this.
He practiced this move a lot in the gym and was very fast while staying in proper position/form for lots of power.
I have copied this move with some success. I time my opponents right cross. As it starts coming, I step in...bobbing to the left. I go right into the proper left hook position which is knees bent, weight over left knee, hands up protecting face....then explode up with my left hook...springing like a released coil spring from left to right and up.
Lots of power can be generated with this punch and you can really catch people by surprise.
And if you miss because he falls backwards slightly, you are now in good position for a nice double leg takedown

i'm a short guy... I'm 5'10"... most the dudes I spar with are atleast 6 even.
Honestly, getting low, jabbing up and throwing an over hand works well. You wont get it a bunch of times because eventually they see it coming. But if you can jab up and then maybe switch to a take down OR go for front leg kicks into the knees.... Being explosive is important too.

Let us know how it goes dude!

Didn't think fighting someone who's 6"6 would be a problem when you're 6"3?
If you were 5"6 well that's a different story. lol.

if he has good hands you don't want to stay on the outside when he's that tall.
if you stay back at arms length he will pick you apart.
keep circling, don't stay in front of him.
getting in close will cause him to clinch, you say he has a good clinch so this could also be a problem.
stay back he has a reach advantage,in close he has his clinch.
you need to take him down and use your ground game.
most guys that height are uncoordinated, not all but most.
