Preventing Scarring

I took a pretty small but burn-like cut (not a deep one but the knuckle dragged under my eye and rubbed off the skin in a square area) about two days ago. I've seen a nurse and she advised me to keep it covered during the day with some bacitracin and then let it get some air at night while I sleep, but she also told me that it's likely to be discolored as a scar once it heals. I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to prevent this from happening? Any info would be great. Thanks.

I saw a product called mederma at a dermatologists office. It just became over the counter. Word is that it is good.
