Pain in joints, hands?
Hey guys, first post on sherdog...
MMA fan, but not a fighter. I recently started doing Bas Rutten's Thai Boxing CD as a heavy bag routine. I'm primarily trying to lose the gut (5'11, 250, would like to be 220-230) so I'm also complimenting it with a bit of weight training.
I started about a month ago, and I've noticed over the last few days some pretty dull aches in my knees, shoulders and forearms--not the sharp pain I usually get the day after a workout. That's not a big deal, but my hands are ACHING, particularly in my palms and top knuckles... I'm wondering if maybe I'm hitting the bag too hard, or not hitting with the right angle of fist, or something like that. Any suggestions?

don't hit so hard. Work on the rest of the aspects of punching-- hips, turning the feet over, etc.

It doesn't seem like you understand the basics of proper protection. Are you even using handwraps? You can use whatever size glove you want but if you hit the bag hard enough you will feel it in your hands. Use handwraps. And don't get the shitty crap from Big5 or your other sporting good stores. Buy a good 180" pair online that will give you enough length to properly protect your knuckles and wrists.
Suggestions: Ringside, Combat Sports, Title Boxing, etc

hmm... My buddy bought the gloves for me, he trains at Team Tompkins gym here, and he bought them through them, so I don't think they're cheap-o gloves. I have no idea what they weigh though, but they do fit properly.
Is wrap required underneath the gloves regardless? I think they might be too tight IF I wear wrap underneath...

Google up the structure of the human hand and look at how many SMALL bones make up just one hand. Yes you NEED HANDWRAPS. Your buddy from Team Tompkins should've told you about the necessities of proper boxing training. Wrapping your hands properly is so important it's not even funny. Unfortunately people starting out boxing tend to learn it the hard way, then all of a sudden that 180" of semi-elastic cotton looks like a miracle worker to them.

ibuprofen, mobic or celebrex. Drink lots of water and eat more fatty foods as that lubes your joints better.

He did suggest wrap when I first bought the bag/gloves, I bought some generic "boxing wrapping" from Canadian Tire, but it was only one length of wrap, and had velcro on it! What kind of wrapping should I be looking for? Is tape an option?
