Cause they think their legs are made of steel and can absorb them. Sometimes they want to counter with a straight punch but it is not always affective, ie you eat a leg kick then swing and miss.

I learned the hard way about not checking legs the first time I sparred in MMA. My thigh was real sore the next day. On an earlier when I used to take TKD I checked a low roundhouse kick and even though we had padding(not the same type of shin pads they use in MMA) the dude winced in pain on the shin to shin contact. He later told me he had shin splints so I told him that a Muay Thai match would not be a good move for him!.

in amatuer fights/sparring, the shinpads make it pretty pointless to check the leg kicks, especially later on when you're too tired to lift your leg up to eat a kick.

In UFC a lot of guys don't have muay thai training, or aren't really that good at it, they prefer to box and wrestle/bjj (you need to hone your reflexes and checking technque by training in muay thai for a very long time to effectively check kicks).

Finally, in Muay thai tournaments like k-1, fighe4rs will check the leg kicks when they can, but the standard of kicking is high, and are FAST so it's not possible to check them.

In fact, unlike boxing where you can just guard up, and turtel away and not get ko-d.. In muay thai you can't simply just guard up, because there are so many different places to attack that you cannot cover all areas... so a lot of muay thai don't really think much about defending, and just go offensive.

Because in MMA you put more weight on your front leg to prepare you to sprawl

Inexperience is probably the number one reason someone wouldnt check a leg kick. Not to many people want to keep throwing leg kicks after hitting your shin a couple times. I also think its a product of short fights. The longer a fight can go on the more important it is to check them.

I always wondered this too... in UFC Rampage lost to Forest and had trouble with Jardine because he didn't check his leg kicks... It seems like an easy enough thing to look for though...

It's not really that bad. The kyokushin karate stance is pretty wide and the leg muscles arent as relaxed as when you stand in a boxing or kickboxing stance.

I dont mind a couple of them. getting blasted by hundreds is a bitch though.
