Muay Thai Strategy? Kicker Vs Puncher

So, I had been going to a boxing class quite consistently, then I went to a Muay Thai class. I started to learn the stance and etc and I think I picked it up quickly. I think I am a pretty good boxer/puncher. I do all right in sparring rounds. Anyways, I sparred with a good kicker, then he caught me with a good head kick, not fun. The guy has a great cut kick too; his round kicks are superb.

So what I would like is some suggestions on strategies to deal with a kicker. Obviously don't hang around in kicking range, but what else? I am very comfortable in punching range and okay in clinching range. I am more of a outside puncher, I like my right cross and long left hook. I heard that a good quick crisp right cross is a good counter to a round kick. I haven't tried it though. Kind of want to see what other guys think before I get my head taken off.

Any help would be appreciated guys. I really want to get this guy. I had a nice little black mark on the outside of my eye. He knows I am hunting him too. During the boxing only sparring rounds, he avoids me.....lol

Well I don't have much advice for you other than to close the distance, but you said you're an outside puncher. To me a kicker sounds like a terrible matchup for you since you'll constantly want to be in his kicking range if that's how you want to fight.

Then again I could be completely wrong since I'm still new to striking, but it seemed logical to me.

The worst enemy for a good kicker is a fighter with even better foot work, Keep the kicker off balance and don't let him set kicks up. If he still tries to kick off balance he is wide open for tons of counter kicks and punches.

Instead of going out to "get this guy" because he kicked you in the head, maybe you should try to learn something from him. Trying to exact "payback" from a more experienced fighter is a really bad idea.

Oh, and keep your hands up.

Best thing to do is to discourage him from kicking. Get good (technique doesnt come natural) at catching his kicks, especially teeps. When fighting a kicker, catch every non-highkick you can and sweep him HARD. Right on the side of the knee.

good advice. i like to discourage kickers by punching them every time they throw a kick. when you see that kick coming, step in and throw a straight punch. that usually works for me

im not much of a striker but id say circle away from his power leg, and keep away from his kicking range, just work on your timing and come in, bang out a combination, then get the fuck out lol you will frustrate the hell outta him

Block the kick and counter with a punching and a kick combo.
