Icon3 Muay Thai Body/Head Roundkick Form and Execution

Sup guys,

Just want to ask about some tips and opinions regarding the correct form and execution of a Muay Thai Roundkick because some instructors always insist that my other foot should always be planted on the ground and should not tiptoe during the kick,
But when I am watching Yodsaenklai Fairtex, Buakaw Por. Pramuk, Samkor and other Pro Nak Muays they do the tiptoe thingy when performing roundkicks to body/head or even in Pads.

I am really comfortable in doing the tiptoe thing than the planted foot that some instructors say..From what I've experienced, always planting the foot to the ground kinda slows down my kick.

Any thoughts on this?
Are there any important aspects of the roundkick aside from the foot position the balance arm and the hip movement?

Thanks in Advance!

I always come up on the ball of my foot as I pivot for all kicks...low, mid and high.

Planting the foot to the ground would hinder how far you can tilt back to get your kick even higher.

But, having said that, everyone has their own way of doing things...so I'm not saying planting your foot is wrong or that it wont work, but I personally always like to pivot up on the ball of my foot.
If this feels more comfortable to you then I would suggest doing it too.

Are you saying you dont take a small side step and swivel your foot when you throw a round kick?

you have to be on the ball of your plant foot to be able to pivot to put power in the kick

That's exactly what he seems to be saying.

There's two primary styles/methods of round kicking in MT and kickboxing. There's the stepper, which you plant and drop weight and there's the pivoting type.

If your instructor is telling you to throw a Thai style round kick with your planted foot flat on the floor, quit that gym immediately. They don't know what they are talking about. You're SUPPOSED to get up on the ball of your foot and pivot. You can't pivot flat footed, unless you want to blow out your knee.

Where did these instructors get that idea, the back of a cereal packet? lol

Exactly Payak.
Step.
Ball of foot.
Bend post leg.
Turn over hips.
It's getting all of these working as a continuous fluid motion that's the difference between a half-ass imitation MT style roundhouse and one with proper form.

Good luck TS!

Your standing leg should always be on the ball of your foot, never flat footed for any kick.
