kickboxing

i started kickboxing, and it does not seem like it is enough in standup. everytime i fight it always ends up on the ground where i hate being. is there any standup i could learn alongside kickboxing to help prevent takedowns.

practice footwork and latteral movement

when you sprawl kick your feet out from under you

do a lot of down ups(sprawl then get up then sprawl again)

practice sprawls with sombody while they go for take downs on you

if you can get into Judo or Wrestling

always practice takedowns under propper supervision

Kickboxing is strictly standup. Of course they won't teach you takedown defense. You're going to have to take a grappling art to learn takedowns and takedown defense.

I know I have seen events that are like Muay-thai, but then there is also takedowns, trips throws etc. It might be san-shou(sp?) or something similar, because I saw Cung Lee beat the hell out of some guy. He would beat him up standing then do a badass takedown or throw.

Agreed.

Simple equations, a skilled submission artist is the most capable at defending against submissions, by that same token a skilled grappler is the most skilled at avoiding the takedowns. You cannot learn how to defend a takedown with a few lessons at sprawling because a sprawl does not always work, it depends much on your timing. Spend some time working on your grappling game with a real instructor. Often times high school coaches teach an off season grappling class. Make sure you go to a Greco or Freestyle grappling class and don't look to a BJJ class to improve your takedown defense.
