Just got my heavy bag, need help!!

This is my first heavy bag I have owned in about 13yrs when I use to box when I was younger. I wrapped my hands with the everlast wraps that came with the set. I have tried the bag gloves that came with the set and a pair of 12oz training/sparring gloves from everlast. The problem is with the top of my fingers. They hurt like I bruised them or something. Is this normal? Thanks in advance for any help.

You mean the tips of your fingers, or around your knuckles?

In my experience, Everlast handwraps are way to short. It's almost like you have to choose if you'd rather support your wrist or cushion your knuckles, and then BAM, you're out of wrap. Try and pick up a pair of Ringside mexican style wraps.

If you're technique is solid, your gloves and wraps are of good quality and you're new to heavybag training, all I can do is tell you what happened to me. Basically, my hands just weren't used to the trama of punching. It ain't natural. I would be really sharp pain in my wrists. In time, and with the help of hand training (levering, knuckle/fingertip push-ups, wrist roller, tearing, bending, sandbag work), my hands just seemed to adapt. One day, they just stopped hurting.

Good luck

Those are probably the cotton Everlast wraps that don't stretch? I use the yellow "pro-style" Everlast wraps that are more elastic and about twice the length. About 10 bucks at sporting goods stores.

It hurts when I punch below the knuckle on my finger. Between the knuckle and the first joint.

I was looking at a good site on hand wrapping and you guys are right. When I get to a point I run out of length. I'll pick up some new ones tomorrow.

Any other suggestions?

if your using 12oz on bag and your hands are feeling sore afterwards you want to think about getting some 16 oz gloves.

Does your finger feel really "stiff" when you clench it tightly on the finger that it hurts? I had this same problem for awhile, as it turned out I had tendonitis. I was perscribed pills for it twice a day for two weeks, and applied hot/cold for 15 minutes right after any boxing related stuff. Fixed it up nicely

If it turns out to be tendonitis, here's what I remember of what was told to me:

Basically, from all of the trauma on your hand, the sheathes in your hand clog slightly and when the tendons pass through these sheathes, it becomes inflamed and that's what is hurting you.

Get it checked out at your FAMILY DOCTOR... not a walk-in clinic, I got NOTHING from them except "ice it" and "stop punching things like a hockey player in a fight" (I know, what the fuck? word for word.). My family doctor figured out what was up in no time flat and I'm now 100% better.
