james irvin striking

I know irvin has some of the most unique natural ability in mma, in regards to his standup; he is, imo, explosive, hard hitting, athletic and strong. His power is prob top ten p4p, its not that he koed the best guys in the world; its the way he koed them, damn near able to put a chalk outline around guys after he gets his hands on them.

martin-a guy w/a great chin-durability and irvin KILLED him w/one knee, Hector Ramirez went in w/lambert and beat him and took a huge assault by forrest before he was stopped, irvin destroyed him w/one shot. Thiago was dropped w/one strike and houston alexander, who may have a shaky chin, but made it through jardine and sakara's intial attacks; yet was stopped by one, maybe two shots from irvin.

i think he can match silva's athletic ability-speed/power/strength/exp; but my question is this, where is his standup...how good or poor is his overall striking and esp his muay thai

thx in advance

James Irvin has a lot of power, but his weakness is that he doesn't throw combinations; he relies too heavily on finding that one big shot to win fights. If he hadn't of found it in the second round against Hector Ramirez, he would of lost that fight. Against a technical striker with a solid chin, he'll eventually gas and lose every time.

i agree with Joey. he relies on that one big shot and doesnt put combinations together. but the one thing i love about watching guys like Irvin is that he can end the fight with just one strike. his kicks look pretty powerfull but he doesnt really set them up that well. looks like he just throws them out of nowhere.

but i am a big fan of Irvin and i hope he wins

I think Silva will win, but I think Irvin has a good chance at exposing one thing....I have said this for a long time, Silva is not as strong (physically) as people give him credit for. Before all you Silva fans flame on let me just say that I am a big Spider fan myself. But I can distinguish between strength/power and technique/conditioning/athleticism. I think it is easy to look strong when you have a thai clinch on someone who has no idea how to deal with it. Further, I think it makes you look strong when you have weakened a guy with brutal knees to the ribs. But that doesn't make you physically powerful. In the weight room I think Silva would get dominated by most UFC middleweights, let alone light heavyweights. I think in a bigger division Silva will get exposed, and Irvin may be the one to do it. I think Rich was stronger than Silva at MW, he just couldn't match Silva's superior technique. Think about it, strength/power comes from muscle mass and Silva is one of the longest, skinniest fighters in the MW division. His technique and conditioning make up for his lack of strength but I think the nuthuggers may get a rude awakening in the Irvin fight.

I think this fight is similar to Silva vs Leben. I think Irvin will last longer than Leben because he wont be caught off guard with how good Silva is like i think Leben was. The size difference will also come into effect. I still think Silva will be able to pick him apart like he did Leben though. Interesting fight though, thats for sure.

i don't know that leben is as athletic or dynamic a fighter, much less striker as irvin; more importantly irvin is just a much better tech striker than chris.

so he won't be the immobile heavybag leben was when he faced silva
