I love the jab

Everytime time someone comes at me with a flurry I just stick the my jab out there and more often then not it smacks him right back. I actually had a guy on queer street from a counter jab

That's what I like to call the "intercepting jab", a lot of guys don't understand what a good bop to the nose or lip will do to someone who is in the middle of a combination, let alone 3 or 4 of them. It's an excellent way to deter even the most stalwart of pressure fighters and brawlers whereas jabbing from range only fuels them.

Best ... punch ... ever.

There are many ways to throw it, many reasons to throw it, and no single "right" way to do it.

Boxing without the jab would just be brawling.

Love him or hate him, Wlad has one of the most dominant jabs I've seen in boxing for awhile. And no, he doesn't turn the hip.

I like to jab them as they come in. I get a lot of pop on it even when I dont mean to. I think its because it is a natural reaction so when i see them stepping in i just trow it out there. I was sparring a girl who is an amateur and i cracked her pretty hard with it. Hard enough to where she stepped back and we stopped for a few seconds. Of course, being the gentlemen that i am, the next round when we clinched i threw her to the floor

And of course this was one of my first days in this gym and everyone was watching. I felt like a real asshole but it was an accident. The jab was stiff but not devestating and when she hit the ground it was more of her feet tripping up than me throwing her. Still pretty fuckin embarassing though. Poor girl

When you guys throw the jab do you turn the hip, and stay planted? Or do you step into the jab? I throw my jab similar to Andre Berto......s 12 year old sister, step into it.

I was taught to step into it, and that's how I do it.

The jab is an essential element in the sport of boxing, its something I utilize quite a bit as a means of keeping control of the distance and giving them something to think about during an advance.

But you can over rely on it easily, pumping out a robotic jab like some caveman when you need to be throwing combinations, uppercuts, whatever the case may be determined by situation can ultimately lead to severe discomfort on your part. You have to use your head out there, but there is also an element of instinct to it as well that is developed through dedicated practice and training with people who have been there, done that and know what they're talking about.

Zankou just touched on something I wished more people understood, which is the various ways to throw a jab and reasons to do so. There are definitely different schools of thought in the sport of boxing, with each school of thought having ground to stand on in their own right.

Shucking the shoulder for the jab is more important than turning the hip. See the Quartey footageand watch his shoulder carefully. The slight turn and shuck is a lot of power source.

Also, kind of funny you tagged up a female Fighter with the jab where if you read Diego's log, he got tagged up BY a female Fighter with her jab and hand-speed. lol

Shucking the shoulder is also vital for defense against the overhand right. If you don't turn that shoulder and keep it high, the right can sneak over the top of your extended jab.

Shorter fighters are always looking to counter with that overhand right, it's their bread and butter. You gotta throw the jab behind the shoulder, and pivot out to the right afterwards. I also like to lower my level while throwing the jab when my opponent is a shorter guy, since they invariably look to duck under the jab for the overhand right or left hook to the liver. Assuming this is orthodox/orthodox, of course.
