Hip Restriction during muay thai training

I'm just starting in muay thai and find that I get some pain when i check kicks by bringing my knee to my elbow. Can anyone offer some advice on specific strectches or exercises I can do to loosen up my hip or a good book to purchase that will help me gain the flexibility required for muay thai. Thanks

is it pain like a cramp in the side of your thigh next to your ass? << that kind of pain is normal for beginners to experience, it takes months for your joints to adjust and get used to the kicking motion, and they are going to complain along the way. a good stretch to do is to kick one leg out to the side as high as u can and hold it there for as long as u can.

Like Bux said, it's more than likely just weak hip flexors, like your psoas, or gluteus med. For most beginners, unless they've trained in some form of MA before, bringing the knee above the waist is an unnatural movement.

What about when you throw high roundhouse kicks, or push kicks? I would suspect these would also cause pain.

I have constant pain in my right hip which restricts my flexibility...so unless I warm up for about an hour I can't throw kicks too high with my strong leg. My physician says it may be traumatic arthritis (common sports condition) or bursitis. It has been that way for a year...I don't have the 300 a week to do physical therapy.
