Head Movement

What are good and effective drills to develop head movement?

I don't really move my actual head much, I try to keep my chin down. Alot of ab work. Practice slipping and bobbing. A good drill is to tie a rope from one end of the room to the other. Now bob and weave under it. You can start throwing punches too when you feel comfortable doing so.

I do the rope drill, but what I want to know is how can make head movement second nature.
I appreciate the advice though.

If you haven't already, learn how to slip properly by asking your coach (I'm assuming that you have one) as well as bobbing and weaving, etc. Then do the rope drill as mentioned. I also work with a double end bag to improve my coordination. An important aspect to remember is that you don't want to make arbitrary movements with your head. Don't just move it for the sake of moving it. Do it properly and anticipate punches with someone who will do a light sparring session with you. When you shadow box, make sure that you are visualizing your opponent throwing punches at you so you can work your head movement into your repertoire.

Depending upon where I'm at. If I'm training at Gold's I usually slide out their power rack for squats and position the bar so i can dip under on both sides. I like to throw punches and bob while I'm doing it. I usually have a friend time me, and run 3-5minute circuits. You can also do this on a smith machine, just raise the bar high enough so that you can dip under it and come up on both sides, just practice doing that, work on your speed and keeping your guard up.

Is your posture relaxed when you spar? If you're a tense fighter chances are head movement doesn't feel natural. You can do mechanical head movement but that is more dodging punches rather than messing up your opponents plan.

I'm totally not trying to be a dick here, but.... that's a pretty D-Bag thing to do at a regular weight lifting/fitness gym, especially Gold's (that's like holy ground to bodybuilders & meat-heads in general). Unless they have so many power racks that you could in no way ever block someone from using it as it's supposed to be used. It's like those people that use the damn bench press benches (not the independent benches) to do ab work. Same goes for the smith machine.

Imagine if someone stated doing barbell clean & presses in the middle of the jiu jitsu matted area while you and a few guys are trying to get in some extra rolling time. You'd be like "take your a** to the designated weight lifting area," right?

Sorry for my rant, there is just a lot of D-Baggery (a lot worse than that) at my gym.

You said you already use a slip rope... Just add no quarters suggestion in to your routine.
