Hanging a heavy bag...

Is it cool to hang a heavy bag in just a single beam in a basement or do you need a triple beam with a pillar supporting it?

No I think you'll be ok hanging a heavy bag from just a single beam in your basement. You wont need a triple beam with supports unless your bags a few thousand pounds. How big is your heavy bag?

my 100 pound heavybag needs to be held by another peson as i hit it.

it seems likely that mine is gonna fall if its not held.

its in a single beam.

I have this little 40 lb. bag. Really all I have here at home. I'm trying to find a way to set it up in a house.

I just hang a pillow from my celing fan and practice karate chops.

Uhhh but really if you have just a 100 lb bag you might want to bungee it to the ground so it doesn't go crazy and break shit.

but if the garage is old, then yes there is some worrying.

just the one beam is holding 100 pounds, plus when i hit it its even more force hanging from a small hole in an old beam.

also another thing, the bag i have is a TITLE 100 pond heavy bag, beware of the original hook it hangs on. its very weak and was about to bend all the way open on me, good thing i caught it when i did. a few more punches and it would have fell on me.

If it's in the basement then you are talking about the 1st floor joists. Most likely they are either 2x12 or TGI's (9.5" or 12" depending on span / loading criteria) if newer construction. Most houses are designed for a 100# per square foot "live load". Deflection of the joist would depend on the span and centers (16" or 24") since the dead load would change.
Long story short- structurally there is no problem with adding a 100# spot load to your joist. It would be more stable located closer to a supporting wall or beam since there would be less deflection. Most houses have a center support beam running down the center and this is a better place to hang the bag. The only problem with hanging on a structural element (steel beam or floor joist) is the sound transmittal from hitting the bag will reverberate throughout the house. This can be minimised to an extent by using a heavy spring or nylon strapping between the bag and the attachment point. Aslo anchoring the bottom will help stop the bag from jumping and transmitting sound. this will help keep you wife from complaining about the noise while she is trying to watch TV.

Most ceiling joists are part of a 2x4 truss system and are more picky about spot loading than a floor joist. The trusses are designed around a set of triangles. If you want to attach directly to the trusses it would be best to attach at one of the junctures of the triangles, look in your attic to determine where this is. A better solution, and one that allows you to place the bag where you want, would be to use a waler. This whould be a 2x which is installed on top of the ceiling joist so as to span several of them and distribute the load to 4 or 5 trusses. Attach you load to the waler and not the truss system.

I had my heavy bad hung from the ceiling in the basement and it shook the shit out of the upstairs. I had to build a structure of 2x4's attached to the cement wall to hang it so that I wouldn't destroy our dining room hutch. From there it causes no vibrations in the house. After a couple years of use it's still working well. I can give you some specifics of how I did it if you are interested.
